Functional Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the UNMAS Operation/ Quality Assurance advisor, he/she will be responsible the following main duties:

  • Provide support in the capacity building process of national NGOs at Regional level,
  • Assist with the setting up of internal and external UNMAS meetings and preparation of related briefing materials and recording of meeting minutes at regional level;
  • Assist supervisor in coordinating general operational Mine Action related activities within South Kordofan office, carried out by Humanitarian mine action partners;
  • Assist Victim Assistance initiatives including coordination meetings, monitoring the training of VA beneficiaries, and data collection efforts.
  • Support in providing substantive inputs in the preparation of mine action operational plans and projects reports;
  • Translate operations related documents when requested from Arabic to English and vice versa;
  • Liaise regularly with NMAC Operations and Information Management Sections, and check data prior to it being sent for input into UNMAS Programme Management Office;
  • Ensure all operations related UNMAS/NMAC correspondence is received, dispatched and recorded;
  • Assist in development and maintenance of tracking system to assist the operation advisor in following up on project pending issues;
  • Follow up on project action points to ensure deadlines are met, address delays and bring to the attention of operation advisor;
  • Assist supervisor in conducting formal investigations of mine/ERW incidents/accidents;
  • Assist in conducting analysis of project reports, investigations and preparation of recommended adjustments as required;
  • Produce regular progress reports on his/her specific allocated tasks to the operation advisor
  • Any other duties as requested by the Supervisor or Head of Section.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

  • First Level University Degree (Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent) with 2 years of relevant experience; OR

  • Secondary School Diploma (High School or equivalent) with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience.

Experience

  • Relevant experience is defined as experience in operations in humanitarian, conflict, post-conflict, Non-profit Organizations (NGOs) or development contexts.
  • Experience in preparing project plans and reports is required.
  • EOD Level 3 is desired.
  • Computer literacy and experience working with MS Office (Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint) is required.

Languages

  • Fluency in English (speaking, writing and reading) is required.
  • Fluency in Arabic (speaking, writing and reading) is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is desired

Background Information – Sudan The UNMAS Sudan office is based in Khartoum and works closely with the Government of Sudan and international partners with an aim of reducing the impact of explosive hazards on civilian population. UNMAS Sudan’s main activities include land release, risk education (RE) and victim assistance (VA) in areas affected with explosive ordnance. Currently, South Kordofan, Blue Nile and West Kordofan are affected with mines and ERW while 5 Darfur states are believed to contain ERW only. UNMAS also provides technical advice and training for Sudan National Mine Action Center (NMAC) and national mine action NGOs for improving national mine action capacity
