The British Embassy in Spain is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a Transition Communications Campaign Project Manager.

This is an exciting temporary project built around the end of the transition period, and the first months of our new relationship, in a key country for one of the UK’s top international priorities – securing the Future Relationship with the EU. Communications is an essential part of our EU Exit engagement work: explaining the UK position across a wide range of issues linked to EU Exit, i.e. security, trade, defence and UK nationals, setting out UK ambition in the face of some criticism in the press on Spain.

You will take over this role as the UK reaches the peak of preparations for the end of the Transition Period. Employing a campaigning approach, you will immediately get involved in our ‘Business Readiness’ work, specifically deploying effective communications products to help UK and Spanish businesses prepare for cross-border trade from 1 Jan 2021 onwards.

The UK’s biggest international priority for 2021 is its presidency and hosting of the global climate change summit, COP26, in Glasgow in November. You will have responsibility for leading all of the Spain networks communications on climate change, working closely with policy officers to deliver our objectives with Spain and promote the UK’s international reputation as a Force for Good in the world.

More broadly, you will be responsible for pushing the UK’s soft power strengths, through identifying and implementing GREAT campaigns, and promoting the strong ties between the UK and Spain through our BE bilateral campaign. You will be supported by a Campaigns and Digital Officer to help deliver on these priorities.

You will work closely with our Digital Manager to provide oversight of our digital platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Flickr) and ensure coherence in our digital content. This includes planning and gridding content, as well as helping to improve understanding of and impact in the digital space through analytical tools and evaluation of content.

There is also a crisis communications aspect to this job, as we operate a whole of mission crisis response in the Spain network. You will be expected to deputise for the Director of Communications and take shifts as Media Manager during crises. In the past this has included terrorist attacks and our response to the C19 pandemic.

The job is ideally suited to someone with project work experience, as it will involve project working within a campaign structure. Existing Spanish language skills are highly desirable.

Learning and Development

The Spain Network takes Learning and Development seriously. This role offers a rewarding combination of strategic thinking, political judgement, communications skills and staff management. The work is fast paced and challenging, but also rewarding, working with collaborative teams, and an energetic Ambassador. You will also have the opportunity to make full use of the FCDO’s extensive Learning and Development resources via the International Academy.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • For Business Readiness and Climate Change, you will require a campaign approach to key influencers, understanding who they listen to, what arguments they have used, how we might shift them, and what tools we have to use. Working across Spain Network teams. 50%

  • Lead on GREAT and BE bilateral campaign outreach, showcasing best of UK innovation, creativity and diversity. Working with partners to identify key themes and secure central funding and sponsorship. Highlight UK soft power strengths to counter any negative perceptions associated with Brexit. Champion Europe-wide project, in line with individual CBPs where relevant. 25%

  • Oversight of digital platforms and content to improve impact, especially focusing on planning, gridding, analysis, and evaluation. 15%

  • Deputise for Director of Comms, including on crisis response as crisis communications manager. 10%

This job will bring the opportunity to work with all our staff across the Spain network in a variety of locations, with a variety of roles (trade, consular, etc.). Subject to C19 restrictions, there may be opportunities for travel within Spain.

  • Proficient user in both written and spoken English and Spanish (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)*.

  • Communications experience (5 years minimum), including experience of delivering OASIS campaigns and digital campaigns.

  • Strong stakeholder management skills.

  • Strong sense of personal responsibility and ability to assess and initiate activities independently.

  • EU Exit or EU policy making experience desirable.

  • Crisis communications experience would also be desirable.
