The United Nations People of African Descent (UNPAD) Employee Resource Group’s main mission is to promote the equal inclusion, recognition and access for people of African Descent in the United Nations system. UNPAD’s foundation was motivated by the UN General Assembly Resolution 68/237 on the Proclamation of the International Decade for People of African Descent and the UN General Assembly Resolution 69/16 on the Programme of activities for the implementation of the International Decade for People of African Descent. UNPAD’s chapter within UNICEF has just been established.

 

The Consultant will provide guidance and advice to UNPAD in setting up and leading the implementation of diversity and inclusion programmes with a focus on anti-black racism within UNICEF. In collaboration with key stakeholders  (Division of Human Resources, Staff Wellbeing, the Global Staff Association and the Culture and Diversity team) the consultant will also look at diversity and inclusion issues related to sexual orientation, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, disability and any other personal characteristics.

 

The Consultant will support the global efforts in achieving a working environment that is free of racial and all other intersectional forms of prejudice and discrimination. The advisor will support the development, implementation and monitoring of anti-black racism diversity and inclusion initiatives; build partnerships; and collaborate to share knowledge on diversity and inclusion throughout UNICEF.

 

The Consultant will work closely with the Culture and Diversity team in the Office of the Executive Director and the UNPAD UNICEF Chapter Coordination Committee to help rolling out its mandate. The Consultant  will report to the UNPAD UNICEF Chapter Coordination Committee.

 

How can you make a difference?

 

Support the development, implementation and monitoring of anti-black racism, diversity and inclusion initiatives

 

  • Support a landscape analysis to quantify and assess key areas of concern
  • Support DHR in fulfilling its commitment to achieving equitable geographic representation and a diverse workforce
  • Support the implementation of the anti-black racism focus on the internal diversity and inclusion strategy and Action Plan, in consultation with personnel globally
  • Support global efforts to achieve and sustain an organization which is inclusive and diverse  ensuring that a wide range of employees are aware and understand the impact of policy, programming, and resource allocation
  • Support DHR and the Culture and Diversity team to develop diversity analytics, including benchmarking, tracking metrics, analyzing, and generating diversity reporting for various audiences to highlight trends and demonstrate the impact of D&I programmes and initiatives

 

Design and implement network awareness strategy (inclusive of campaigns and activities) to ensure all employees of African descent in UNICEF are aware of the network, its support mechanisms, to boost network membership within UNICEF. This may include the following:

 

  • Develop communication materials to introduce the group (articles, videos, etc.)
  • Advertise the group through different communication channels and platforms: Yammer, organizational newsletters, intranet, HR messages, onboarding, etc.
  • Organize regional-level events to attract members which includes developing webinar/communication materials and coordinating/facilitating sessions in collaboration with co-chairs and Network members
  • Liaise with other stakeholders (other ERGs, Internal communications, Disability Section, Global Staff Association, DEI/Culture team) to ensure maximum impact

 

Support UNPAD to roll out the initiative “Let’s speak about race and discrimination” and other internal initiatives to address racism within UNICEF

 

  • Participate and collaborate in UN system-wide efforts to address racial inequality and regularly contribute to system-wide change efforts
  • Support the design of UNPAD’s global communication plan in an effort to raise engagement and awareness on anti-racism and anti-discrimination.
  • Organize and coordinate global internal outreach events on anti-racism and anti-discrimination.
  • In collaboration with DHR and other key stakeholders, support the development of training programmes and seminars on anti-black racism, diversity and inclusion for all personnel

 

Build and Manage Partnerships

 

  • Collaborate and establish partnerships with employees and stakeholders within and outside UNICEF, including with other UN agencies
  • Ensure best practice approaches are implemented and shared with partners including other UN agencies.

 

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Educational requirements
    • Master’s degree or equivalent in social sciences, gender, human rights, international development,  management, economics, or a related field
    • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree
    • Advanced studies in the field of diversity and inclusion or organizational culture, change management is desirable
    • Experience in analytics is an advantage

 

  • Work experience requirements

 

    • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in the area of  DEI, gender equality,  public policy, social justice, or human rights
    • At least 3 years of experience in programme management and policy development
    • Experience working in the area of diversity and inclusion, specifically anti-black racism, and discrimination issues, preferably in an advisory capacity
    • Experience in working on innovation and change management initiatives is desirable

 

Language requirements

 

    • Fluency in English is required
    • Knowledge of the other UN official working language is an asset
