FAO’s office for Yemen is responsible for developing, promoting, overseeing, and implementing strategies for addressing countrywide food, agriculture, and rural development, and effectively increasing the resilience of livelihoods to respond to food and agricultural threats and crises. Through the EU funded Food Security and Nutrition Information Systems (FSNIS) project, FAO Yemen aims to strengthening evidence-based decision making in Yemen through improved food security, nutrition and livelihoods information and analysis, and applied information systems. The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programs, and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries, and forestry sectors and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

Reporting Lines:

The NIS specialist will work under the overall guidance of the FAO Representative in Yemen and the direct supervision by the Chief Technical Advisor (CTA). The NIS Specialist will lead nutrition information system strengthening of FSNIS working in close collaboration with the Food Security Data Scientist and the other technical units of the FSNIS sector.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and strategic and technical guidance to the Nutrition Information Unit within the FSNIS sector including but not limited to design of nutrition information systems
  • Development and implementation of nutrition situation monitoring systems working closely with UNICEF, ACF and other nutrition partners
  • Contribute to and support the preparation, design and updating of the situation analysis for the nutrition sector(s) to ensure comprehensive and current data on nutrition situation in Yemen to guide policy development, and the design and management of nutrition programmes/projects.
  • Lead the development of nutrition risk monitoring system and indicator thresholds that will be included in the FSNIS conceptual and analytical monitoring framework. In particular work closely with UNICEF, ACF and other partners in enhancing the nutrition risk monitoring system with the aim of integrating to the FSNIS conceptual and analytical monitoring framework
  • Lead IPC Acute Malnutrition analysis in Yemen
  • Work closely with UNICEF, MoPHP and other partners to conduct nutrition surveys and analysis including a food security and nutrition causal analysis
  • Build capacity of FAO staff, external organizations and national governments in nutrition information systems and analysis to effectively inform policies and programmes
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Candidates Will Be Assessed Against The Following:

Minimum Requirements:

  • University degree in statistics, public health, nutrition, or related fields.
  • At least 5 years of experience in nutrition information systems and survey methodologies. Field experience is an asset
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English and limited knowledge (level B) of another FAO official language for COF.REG. For PSA.SBS knowledge of one FAO language level C is required.
