Job Title: Case Worker

 

Location: Samos, Greece (Vathy)

 

Position Type: full-time or part-time

Project description

 

The project provides legal information to refugees on the island of Samos. The team consists of three or four legal case workers, two or three translators, one coordinator and one Greek lawyer. The team offers legal information workshops, individual sessions for applicants before their asylum interview and assistance with family reunification applications. The project also engages in appeal procedures for rejected applicants, accompanies applicants to interviews and represents them in court. Your tasks might include:

 

individual counselling sessions with asylum seekers (together with a second case worker)

 

communication with asylum seekers via social media research on countries of origin

 

presenting legal information workshops on asylum procedure to asylum seekers and volunteers from other NGOs

 

Accomodation costs will be paid for by the RLC Berlin. Travel expenses must be paid by the volunteers themselves. Working language is English. Students of a European university staying for longer than two months on Samos can apply for an ERASMUS grant. The RLC Berlin will gladly support you with your application.

 

In the future, we intend to found a new organisation to replace the project from the RLC Berlin, with a view to professionalizing it even further. We are currently in an interim phase of this, and therefore the work on the ground will not be affected.

 

Preferred Skills

 

  • Experience in counselling refugees in matters of asylum law (e.g. interview preparation, family reunification)
  • Proficiency in English
  • Experience in European asylum and immigration law Passion for issues of human rights law
  • High resilience and flexibility; ability to work independently Experience in team work
  • Proficiency in another language additionally to English (e.g. Greek, French, Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Kurdish)
  • Experience in the non-profit sector
