The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) a federally funded, private, nonprofit grantmaking organization that works to support freedom around the world, seeks a Public Affairs Officer to join the office of Government Relations and Public Affairs. This position is based in Washington, D.C.
Position Summary:
The Public Affairs Officer (PAO) will work as a member of the Public Affairs team to develop effective content for NED’s external communications efforts to reach our diverse audiences. Principal responsibilities include writing, editing, and designing materials that communicate the NED’s mission, explain our programs, and tell the inspiring stories of our grantees and their work to advance democracy in more than 90 countries. This role includes working closely with NED leadership, regional teams, and various initiatives to produce NED’s Annual Report; to lead content production for regular email newsletters, featuring compelling stories to demonstrate NED’s effectiveness and impact; develop storytelling for NED’s website, social media, publications, and other outreach materials. As a key member of the Public Affairs team, the PAO also will participate on special projects, including events and press as needed.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Senior Manager for Media Relations, the PAO will:
- Plan, organize, write, and edit all aspects of NED’s annual report
- Write and edit content for regular e-newsletters
- Write and edit website and social media content
- Coordinate the production of event materials (invitations, programs, etc.)
- Produce and design NED outreach materials, brochures, infographics, etc.
- Be an editorial and creative resource to NED staff
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:

Knowledge/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
- 4+ years professional experience in writing, editing, publishing, and social media.
- Proven experience in layout and design using Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, etc,).
- Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining positive external relations.
- Familiarity with WordPress and HTML.

Other Qualifications:
- Superior written communication skills, experience with feature-style writing (600-800 word sample required).
- Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of international affairs.
- Solid understanding of the NED’s mission and civil society issues.
- Authorized to work in the United States.

- Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects under deadline.
This position is part of the NED Bargaining Unit.
