The Private Sector Fundraising (PSFR) section of UNICEF works with National Committees and UNICEF country offices to maximize income and drive income growth. There are five teams within the PSFR section: the purpose of the Global Philanthropy team is to grow income from major donors, faith and membership-based organizations.

The Major Donor section of the Global Philanthropy team provides strategy development and capacity building support for National Committees and Country Offices, including working with them to conduct prospect research, provide engagement and cultivation opportunities for global partners, share best practices, provide training, and support on prospect cultivation and management. In addition to supporting national markets in their local fundraising, some members of the team also directly cultivate select high-level prospective donors (Global New Business).

The incumbent for this post will be responsible for leading the major donor strategy development and capacity building support for National Committees in Europe and managing the Fund-Raising Specialists (2) dedicated to market support in Europe. In addition, this post will provide managerial oversight for the development of a centralized prospecting function within the Global Philanthropy team to enhance intelligence and prospect development support to National Committees and Country Offices. 

How can you make a difference?

The post Holder will be an essential leader of a small team dedicated to supporting National Committees in Europe. The below is the current primary focus of the role that can be foreseen including but not limited to:

Market Support

  • Overseeing one-on-one coaching to select Major Gift Officers (MGOs) from European markets to ensure the engagement of prospects in their portfolio and/or support in developing their strategy
  • Managing UNICEF’s engagement with prospects and donors at key events held in Europe, including World Economic Forum/Davos and the annual UNICEF Supply Division visit for major donors
  • Support to local offices in hosting high quality national engagement events for donors and ensuring appropriate involvement from senior UNICEF leaders
  • Leading the growth of the UNICEF International Council from European markets and ensuring high level stewardship of those members
  • Driving the development of a stronger culture of philanthropy across UNICEF National Committees in Europe

New Business

  • Lead in the identification and cultivation strategies for $1M+ prospects in collaboration with local fundraisers
  • Inspire and facilitate participation and collaboration in the billionaire strategy and Capital Campaign
  • Manage collaboration with local markets on international prospects

Centralized Prospecting

  • Directing the strategic vision for the establishment of a centralized prospecting function to support the ‘billionaire strategy’ and overall growth in major gifts
  • Creating and managing a reference group of National Committee colleagues to inform the strategy
  • Leading peer-to-peer network mapping across European markets

Cross-Cutting

  • Accountability for tracking and analyzing income and KPIs for European markets
  • Lead on the creation of annual strategic plans for top markets in Europe (including Joint Strategic Planning process)
  • Overseeing global philanthropy investment funding
  • Representing Global Philanthropy team at external and internal events

DELIVERABLES:

Deliverables will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Strategic Plans for top markets in Europe to grow major donor income
  • A strategy and resource plan for the creation of a centralized prospecting function
  • A pipeline of $1M+ prospects across Europe
  • Increase in Major Gift Officers in priority European markets
  • New members to the UNICEF International Council

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education: 

  • Advanced University Degree in a discipline relevant to one of the following areas: Fundraising/Philanthropy, Communication, Marketing, International Relations, International Development, Business, Social Sciences, or a related area.
  • Alternatively, a first level university degree in a relevant area combined with 10 years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in philanthropy and fundraising, including at least 5 years of experience in major gift fundraising
  • Experience managing a team
  • Experience in cultivating and securing high-value gifts
  • Familiarity with European fundraising landscape
  • Experience developing fundraising strategies
  • Practiced communicator with demonstrated ability to condense information and capture and communicate it in a well-structured way
  • Track record of working independently and meeting tight deadlines
  • Knowledge of the UN system, and familiarity with UNICEF programme activities are desirable

Language requirements:

  • Fluency and excellent writing and editing skills in English is required
