The British Embassy in Prague is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Senior Political Officer.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to lead on a number of policy areas for the British Embassy in Prague, building and using policy knowledge, developing a contact network and taking forward project work to deliver Government priorities.
The job holder will join the Embassy’s Political Team to lead on our bilateral climate change and environment agenda at a crucial time for UK diplomacy as it hosts COP26 in November this year. This will require getting up to speed quickly with UK priorities and understanding how we can use our close relationship with the Czech Republic to deliver these, whilst building up policy expertise and a network of contacts to contribute to ensuring ambitious, sustainable global commitments at COP26 and beyond. The job holder will also lead the Embassy’s energy policy work, covering energy security, sustainability, and prosperity.
As a Senior Political Officer the responsibilities are likely to evolve over time as new policy areas emerge, and the Czech Republic’s upcoming EU Presidency is likely to become an increasingly important focus over time.
Main responsibilities will include:
- To lead on the British Embassy’s climate agenda in the Embassy, ensuring that work across the embassy is coordinated and informed by UK government priorities. Coordinate closely with wider CEN and Europe networks to ensure a joined up approach to climate engagement;
- To build up and use a wide contact network in the public, private and NGO stakeholders on climate change and energy issues, to inform reporting and target lobbying;
- To deliver reporting to ensure senior leadership in the Embassy and in UK Government Departments are well informed of developments in the Czech Republic on climate change, energy and other policy areas;
- To use project funding and public diplomacy to raise awareness of green issues and contribute to the public debate on how to respond to the challenges climate change creates.
- Fluency in English and Czech (both oral and written, minimum C1 level*);
- Knowledge of climate policy and/or energy issues;
- Outstanding organisational and networking skills;
- Experience of working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders;
- Ability to draft policy and programme reports in clear English.
- Master’s Degree in a relevant field, for instance, Public Policy, Public Administration, International Relations, Climate and Environment Science, etc.;
- Experience working for an organisation in a relevant field, for example, working for/with national or regional government, international organizations or agencies, or private sector, preferably in climate change;
- Programme management skills.

This is a full-time position of 5 working days (37.5 hours net) per week until 31 March 2022 with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement. Working hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00 with a flexible working hours arrangement. Staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for extra hours worked. The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy enjoys an average of 14 Czech/UK public holidays per year.
The monthly salary is 53,306 CZK (gross). In addition, staff receive meal contribution.
The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and 3 months probationary period.
The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation for the Czech Republic in order to apply.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Czech Republic are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Czech Republic employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Czech Republic and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
