The Department of Applied Social and Political Sciences offers Bachelor Degree majors in Sociology, Political Science, Social Science, Urban Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies and Nonprofit Leadership, and minors in Anthropology and Nonprofit Leadership. The Department also participates in a collaborative program with the University of Baltimore, leading to a Master’s Degree in Human Services Administration.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Department of Applied Social and Political Sciences (ASPS) in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Urban Studies beginning Fall 2021. Coppin State University seeks a forward- thinking leader for the Urban Studies (URST) Program who will teach both lower and upper division courses, serve as a liaison and develop greater collaborations and partnerships between departments, across campus and within the Baltimore community.

The faculty member is expected to engage in community outreach and build relationships with community organizations. It is expected that all faculty members’ activities support departmental program goals/objectives and student learning outcomes (SLO’s).

The successful candidate will have research and teaching experiences in the field of urban studies. Expertise in one or more areas within URST, such as GIS, environmental sustainability, and urban planning and design is favorable. In addition, we seek a candidate who appreciates our unique composition and will be able to contribute to the growth of our multi-discipline social sciences department.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teach undergraduate courses in urban studies and other courses within the department as assigned. Duties also include:

Undergraduate student advising.

Engage in innovative curriculum/course development.

Collaborate with department faculty in providing co-curricular students experiences.

Develop internship partners for student experiential learning and community engagement and supervise URST interns.

Serve as Program Coordinator for the Urban Studies Program to include:

Student recruitment and retention activities.

Increase enrollment in the program.

Engage in assessment activities to maintain the quality and integrity of the program, and to comply with regional accreditation standards.

Represent the program to alumni and other potential donors.

Commitment to scholarly research and publication.

Service on department, college, and university committees and

engagement with the community.

Required Qualifications

EDUCATION:
An earned doctorate in urban studies is preferred. An earned doctorate in any of the department’s social science disciplines with expertise in urban studies programs and/or research is also acceptable.

EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of two years higher education teaching experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Expertise in Urban Studies subfields such as GIS, environmental sustainability, and urban planning and design is favorable.

Experience in recruiting and advising students.

Proven ability and commitment to work collaboratively with people across a diverse range of disciplines and groups.

Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to support student advising, student learning outcomes and program completion.

Demonstrated commitment to community engagement.
