The British Embassy in Paris is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is also part of the UK’s France Network (including offices in Lyon, Bordeaux and Marseille and representation to international organisations in Paris (OECD and UNESCO) and Strasbourg (CoE)).

The British Embassy is currently looking for a Security Officer.

Main roles and responsibilities:

  • Controlling vehicle and pedestrian entrance to the British Embassy, including conducting vehicle searches.

  • Working as Security Officer, supervising the control of access to our buildings.

  • Supervising security procedures.

  • Locking and unlocking procedures.

  • Escorting visitors, contractors and deliveries.

Additional ad hoc tasks assigned by the Security Manager, when required:

  • Working as Security Officer at the Residence, supervising the control of access to our buildings.

  • Monitoring the CCTV and alarm systems.

  • Registering the entrance and leaving of staff and visitors.

  • Issuing passes to visitors.

  • Supervising contractors at the Chancery.

  • Registering and scanning mail and parcels delivered to the Embassy.

  • Liaising with French Authorities when required by HR Office.

  • Checking guest lists during events organized at the Residence or Embassy, dealing with members of the public in a polite and professional manner, including conducting bag searches.

  • Completing assigned tasks according to the standard operating procedures.

  • Professional proficiency in English (C1 Level) and ability to communicate effectively in French (B2 Level)*.

  • Proven track record of working well in a team but also autonomously.

  • Ability to work shift patterns (including weekends, Nights and bank holidays) and to be flexible regarding taking on extra shifts to cover colleague’s absences.

  • Strong customer service skills as the guard/Messenger is often the first point of contact.

  • Proven track record of making quick and effective decisions.

  • Punctuality and excellent personal presentation.

  • First aid trained.

  • Previous experience in a security environment (private, military or police).

This is a full-time fixed term contract for 6 months with possibility of renewal and shift work.

All appointments are subject to professional background check satisfactory security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to provide a copy of his/her passport or national identity card for all nationalities held, an up-to-date criminal record (casier judiciaire) for recent countries of residence (which can be obtained online at casier-judiciaire.justice.gouv.fr), two written proofs of address (utility invoices and/or bank statements) and two references.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in France are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local French employment law and FCDO guidance for Local Staff. The posts we offer are not an entry point into the UK’s Diplomatic Service.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in France and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
