The Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies (MFJS) in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Denver offers students a robust understanding of the role of the media in contemporary society. With its emphasis on developing strong communication skills across various platforms and its grounding in the critical evaluation of media practices, the departments offerings prepare students for the pursuit of excellence in the constantly evolving media, film and journalism professions. The department offers undergraduates degrees in film studies and production, journalism studies, media studies, and strategic communication (public relations). At the graduate level, the department offers a master of arts in media and public communication (strategic communication or media and globalization emphasis) and a master of arts in international and intercultural communication.
Position Summary
The Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies invites applications for a one-year Visiting Teaching Assistant Professor position for the 2021-2022 academic year beginning Fall 2021. Eligible candidates will have received a Ph.D. The candidate will teach eight classes in the common curriculum area in the media criticism, media industries, media and social change issues and advanced seminar courses. Preference is for seminars in either Indigenous, Latin American, Asian, African/American or Multiperspectival Cinema or Cinema and Inequalities. The successful candidate will teach eight courses over three quarters in the university-wide Common Curriculum (http://www.du.edu/commoncurriculum).
Essential Functions
Teach eight courses, which will include a combination of common curriculum classes and advanced seminars, including a graduate class in Activist Media.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work effectively with diverse populations, with particular implementation of inclusive principles in the classroom.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in communication or related field.
Ability to teach 8 courses over 3 quarters each year, including common curriculum classes and Advanced Seminar courses.
Must have training in and demonstrated capacity for teaching media criticism, media industries, media and social change issues and advanced seminar courses.
Demonstrated expertise in critical race theory/intersectional approaches to film and society.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to teach advanced seminars in Indigenous Latin/Latin American, Asian/Asian American, African/African American, Global Cinema, or Multiperspectival Cinema or Cinema and Inequalities.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is UC.
Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $48,000 – $50,000.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
