North American Ministries responds quickly when natural disasters strike, deploying an army of volunteers to come alongside homeowners to bring relief and compassion in Jesus’ Name. The Disaster Relief Program Manager leads North American Ministries (NAM) disaster relief responses in the areas most affected by a natural disaster. When not deployed, this position helps maintain a “ready to deploy” status and implements plans designed to further the ministry of the Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Relief Program. Position requires hands-on leadership with teams in the field.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Maintains a personal, active relationship with Jesus Christ and is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ.
  • Supports the Vice President, NAM by leading deployments in response to disasters across the United States. 
  • Leads and oversees all aspects of the deployment. Sets up programs; works with church partners and interacts with local emergency management officials; supervises deployed staff and key volunteers; organizes, trains, and directs general volunteers; and ensures safety and training procedures are implemented and followed.
  • Serves as Incident Commander, in the Incident Command System model of emergency response, during active deployments. Assists in filling key roles such as Assistant Program Manager, Volunteer Coordinator, or Office Manager based on the response dynamic. 
  • Maintains accurate listings and placement of all assigned disaster relief field inventory.
  • Oversees financial transactions, prepares and submits daily/monthly report of activities, and holds and attends regular weekly staff meetings.
  • Establishes communication and fosters relationships with churches, government agencies, and other relief organizations.
  • Works with the Program Management team to maintain awareness of natural disaster activity across the U.S. Monitors weather opportunities to respond. 
  • Represents the ministry at conferences and speaking engagements.
  • Provides technical insight and content development for response-related procedures.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities, but does require the ability to lead and influence members of a team. Responsible for supervising staff and volunteers while on deployments. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Ability to obtain a Class A restricted driver’s license and a valid Department of Transportation Medical Card.
  2. Working knowledge of general construction and general chainsaw use
  3. General Knowledge of Excel, Word, and the ability to learn in-house specialized computer applications
  4. Highly effective communication skills including written and public speaking
  5. Ability to work well under pressure and in difficult situations with limited resources 
  6. Ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions
  7. Proven ability to build and maintain an effective team with ever-changing people 
  8. Ability to do the work asked of our volunteers 
  9. Ability to use given data and statistics to determine volunteer needs, length of deployment, and forecasting completion dates 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university and two (2) to three (3) years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Twelve credit hours of college-level Biblical studies are strongly preferred.

FIELDWORK & WAREHOUSE ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to the effects of disasters. The employee is required to minister to people who have suffered the loss of homes, possessions, and in some situations the loss of life. The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions including extreme heat and humidity, and occasionally extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to insects and animals; floodwater and mold; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; and explosives. The noise level in the work environment can be extreme.

Frequent and extended domestic travel away from home is required (approximately 50% -65% of the year).
