The British Embassy in Copenhagen is part of a world-wide network, representing British political & economic and consular interests overseas and is currently looking for a Climate Change and Energy Officer to lead and coordinate the British Embassy Copenhagen’s work to combat climate change and promote sustainable energy links between the UK and Denmark. To drive diplomatic action in support of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in the UK, in November 2021.
The jobholder’s primary roles and responsibilities will include:

Drive implementation and cross-Embassy coordination of our climate strategy for Denmark, including in the lead up to COP26 in the UK in November 2021, working with trade, economic, political, programme and communications colleagues. This will include policy and project delivery aligned with Embassy climate objectives, such as on energy transition, Wind and North Sea sustainable power, decarbonisation/Race 2 Zero, and green finance.

Deliver on cross-Embassy climate priorities and support the Embassy and the Ambassador’s climate-related activity.

Support Whitehall colleagues on energy and climate engagement with Denmark, through reporting on developments in Denmark and on Embassy climate activities.

Liaise with officials in the Danish Department of Climate, Energy and Utilities and the Danish Energy Agency on policy and operational elements of delivering COP26.

Manage strategic engagement with non-Government actors, managing cooperation with our network of working level contacts in sub-national authorities, representatives of businesses, and civil society.

Support Ministerial and official visits from the UK related to COP26 and climate events in Denmark.

Work with our Public Diplomacy and Communications Team to design and deliver events, activities and communications products in support of the Embassy’s climate objectives.

Manage delivery of climate-related programme activity, including on sustainable agriculture and a potential project on Arctic environments.

Experience working for an organisation in a relevant field, for example, working for/with national or state government, international organizations or agencies, preferably in energy and climate change. Experience of working across a large team to coordinate related activity.

Strong understanding of international climate change policy, with relevant experience including from university or previous professional work experience.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Fluent written and spoken English language skills (to at least level C1 CEFR)*

Experience of managing diverse and senior level relationships.

Knowledge or experience of project management and relevant skills.

Danish language skills.

This is a full-time fixed-term contract for 8 months with possibility of extension, subject to funding.
The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance.
The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation for Denmark in order to apply.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Copenhagen are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Danish employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Denmark and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
