Main purpose of job:

To contribute to the UK government work to address climate change, including diplomatic action to support delivery of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in November 2021.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

  • To support implementation of the High Commission’s COP26 strategy for Australia, working to the Head of Climate Diplomacy and with political, prosperity and communications colleagues at the British High Commission and in British Consulates across Australia. This will include delivery of activities aligned with the COP26 goals of mitigation, adaptation, finance and international collaboration. The climate adviser will be required to organise and deliver events, including logistics and stakeholder management.
  • To provide regular reporting and analysis of climate change developments in Australia in support of the Australia Network Climate Change and Clean Growth Working Group and UK government departments including the Cabinet Office Copunit Team, the FCDO, and BEIS.
  • To prepare briefs, speaking notes, and background materials to support the COP26 related representational work of the Australia Network, including the British High Commissioner, Dep/Consul Generals, Head of Climate Diplomacy and the Senior Policy Adviser.
  • To assist the Australia Network Climate Change and Clean Growth Working Group in their engagement with Australian stakeholders, through information management of activities and contacts, and as required external communications products.
  • To support in-person and virtual visits in Australia by UK ministers and officials, including the British High Commissioner, relating to COP26 and climate diplomacy.
  • To hold a corporate responsibility objective (such as on Learning and Development, Reward & Recognition, Wellbeing or Tech Overhaul) which contributes to the wider corporate agenda of the Australia Network.

Essential on arrival:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, for instance, Climate and Environment Science, International Relations or Public Policy.
  • Experience working for an organisation in a relevant field, for example, working for/with government, international organisations or agencies, preferably in climate change.
  • Experience organising and delivering events, including stakeholder management and external communications.
  • Understanding of international climate change policy, with relevant experience including from university or professional work experience.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience of managing diverse and senior level relationships.
  • Knowledge or experience of project management and relevant skills.
  • Understanding of Australian climate change policies and politics
  • Understanding of UK climate change policies

This position is being advertised as a 7 months fixed-term position (to 31 March 2022 only), and will be extended subject to performance and availability of funding. 

Salary is at AUD 77,739 per annum + annual leave loading and 11% superannuation

Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.

Open to Australian citizens, permanent residents, and partners/dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in Australia and candidates with local permit/right to work in Australia.

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment and security checks. Staff who are locally recruited by the British High Commission are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to Australia local employment law.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. All candidates must be legally able to work and reside in the country of the vacancy with the correct visa/work permit status or demonstrate eligibility to obtain the relevant permit. Any costs related to obtaining or renewing permits and visas are the responsibility of the successful applicant.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount. 

Working patterns:

The British High Commission supports flexible working. Work outside of core hours may sometimes be required

The position will be based in the British High Commission Canberra. The position will also require travel to other Posts as needed in the delivery of events.
