Legal Assistant – IJP
Job Summary/General Purpose of Job
Accountable for providing administrative support to Attorney, Accredited Representative, and/or Paralegal staff such as typing, filing, preparation of routine reports, scheduling appointments, answering phone calls, and responding to e-mails and information requests.
Principal Duties/Job Responsibilities
Provides administrative support and assistance to assigned legal staff. Prepares legal filings, and documents (e.g., immigration applications, correspondence, translations, etc.) as directed.
Assesses the urgency of situations and determines appropriate actions, monitors status of pending items, and provides updates/feedback to appropriate legal team members.
Monitors case activities and maintains the data integrity of case management systems.
Accesses, processes, and ensures the confidentiality and control of client information.
Assists with referral of clients to pro bono counsel as directed.
Conducts and assists with coordination and tracking of other legal services as necessary.
Travel to detention center once or twice a week.
Performs other related duties as required.
Basic Qualifications and Interests
Possession of a high school diploma or GED. Fluency in English and Spanish in written and spoken forms. Intermediate proficiency in both the Microsoft Office Suite of products and with Google tools and performance.
Preferred Qualifications and Interests
Possession of an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Prior volunteer, community, or work experience regarding immigration or detention. Prior work experience with children, particularly from Central America and including Mayan language-speaking populations. Prior non-profit experience, particularly involving field work or work in remote locations. Previous experience using legal terminology using legal terminology, legal document formatting, and assisting with court filings.
