JOB BRIEF
As part of the Religion & Inclusive Societies team, this position will support a new research initiative on the role of religion in nonviolent action. The project seeks to develop and promote improved knowledge about the varied ways religious ideas, communities, institutions, leaders and practices shape nonviolent resistance and contribute to its success.
Responsibilities of the Research Assistant (RA) will include qualitative and quantitative research, data collection, and analysis. The RA will also support the drafting and writing of publications and reports related to the project.
Desirable applications will have a strong understanding of mixed-methods research, including demonstrable knowledge of statistical methods and case study research, and familiarity with nonviolent resistance in theory and/or practice. The applicant will also be organized, possess superior research, writing, and analytic skils, and be able to work effectively in a highly collaborative environment.
Work Schedule: An average of 20 hours per week
Expected Project Dates: October 2020 – May 2021 (with the possibility of extension)
Pay: $15.00 – $15.75 per hour
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Assist with the data cleaning, coding, management, and analysis.
* Conduct background research and case studies on nonviolent movements.
* Support communication and partnerships across the project team and potentially with local research organizations or case study research.
* Contribute to project reports and publications
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
* Current M.A or Ph.D student pursuing a master’s degree in international relations, conflict resolution, political science, economics or related field.
* Coursework or previous experience on nonviolent action and in mixed-methods research design.
* Experience in cleaning, managing, and analyzing composite datasets.
* Knowledge of Stata and/or r.
* Strong organizational and analytical skills.
* Excellent written communication skills.
* Must have the ability to work in a team, as well as independently.
USIP’s Research Assistant program is administered through the Consortium of Universities in the Washington Metropolitan area. Any full-time university student in the Washington area is eligible for these openings.
All USIP contract and employee positions are contingent upon the favorable completion of a suitability background investigation.
Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
