Program Overview:
‘WRI Faith and Sustainability’ is a new WRI initiative that aims at supporting existing and new faith-based projects in the area of sustainability and enabling faith-based communities to identify ideas and programs that build capacity for community-level solutions to sustainability challenges. The magnitude of the climate crisis and the urgent need for action require innovative partnerships. WRI Faith and Sustainability pursues the untapped potential of faith-based groups to contribute to sustainability efforts and fight climate change. It fosters partnerships between faith-based groups, governments, the science and private sectors to create and scale best climate action practices with the goals of reducing poverty, growing economies and protecting natural resources.
WRI’s Faith and Sustainability believes that faith-based organizations have the potential and influence to undertake timely, informed, science-based and coordinated work that can reduce climate change. This position will be based in WRI Center for Equitable Development where the needed expertise for this project currently resides. The Center for Equitable Development works with governments, the private sector, civil society and citizens to address issues that matter most to vulnerable communities: adaptation to climate change, access to clean energy, environmental rights, water and air pollution, social equity and open, responsive government. We start with analyses of voice, power and vulnerability in environmental decision-making. Our research concentrates on building momentum for change, identifying critically important steps that officials across all levels of government must take to ensure inclusivity, transparency and accountability. Through our analysis and coalition-building, we build citizens’ capacity to engage in the environmental decisions that impact their lives and ensure more just, sustainable outcomes. And we mobilize civil society networks that drive bottom-up change and secure better futures for communities around the world.
