Context:

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) conducts and supports data analysis designed to guide and inform migration policy and practice. The Global Migration Data Analysis Centre (GMDAC), based in Berlin, Germany, responds to IOM’s call for upgrading its capacity to collect and analyse migration data, and to develop closer partnerships with data providers and academic institutions. GMDAC acts as a “data hub” for decision-makers and practitioners seeking the best available migration data.

Together with IOM’s Multilateral Processes Division in Geneva, GMDAC developed the Migration Governance Indicators (MGI) as a benchmarking tool to support governments in assessing their existing frameworks on migration.

Under the overall supervision of the Director of GMDAC, the direct supervision of the MGI Data Coordinator and in coordination with the MGI team at GMDAC and Multilateral Processes Division (MPD), the successful candidate will assist with and contribute to the revision, production and publication of MGI matrices and MGI reports.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Assist and provide technical guidance to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and IOM Country Offices on MGI matrices and reports as well as on MGI follow-up assessments, including guidance on the effective integration of comments and feedback by IOM colleagues and government counterparts.

  2. Assist with copy editing, layout and publication on the Global Migration Data Portal and IOM’s Online Bookstore of all MGI reports as well as other MGI-related publications.

  3. Review MGI matrices and reports for quality assurance purposes, including MGI follow-up assessments as well as any other MGI-based publication, and bring issues to the attention of the supervisor.

  4. Encourage the use of MGI data for project development by IOM’s regional and country offices by preparing and packaging data for these offices when required.

  5. Update the Migration Governance Indicators database, and check and follow up on its use for internal IOM documents as well as for external publications.

  6. Provide inputs for communication activities and the production of promotional materials related to MGI, including social media, the GMDAC website and other communication channels.

  7. Draft and participate in presentations on the MGI.

  8. Perform such other related duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

• Master’s degree in Economics, International Relations, Migration studies, Social Sciences, Law, Development Studies, International Affairs or a related field from an accredited academic institution with two years of relevant professional experience; or

• University degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

• Strong background in migration governance;

• Experience in governance and policy analysis, ideally in the field of migration;

• Strong experience in data analysis, ideally on migration data;

• Experience with key global and regional processes in the field of migration;

• Experience with statistical programmes, like STATA, is an advantage.

Skills

• Strong organizational skills;

• Computer literacy, especially Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel;

• Ability to timely understand the Organization’s structure and portfolios;

• Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;

• Proven ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to set deadlines;

• Demonstrated ability of how to multi-task, prioritize, and work independently.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

For this position, fluency in English and working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is required (oral and written).

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
