WRI India has the capacity to convene key stakeholders, and forge strategic partnerships with governments, business, foundations, civil society organizations, institutes and NGOs, to scale-up solutions that can bring game-changing results for the sustainable management of natural resources in India.
Program Overview
The Lead, Equity and Poverty guides integration of equity and poverty considerations in the work of WRI India. The candidate leads WRI India’s program development, research and engagement on equity and poverty. The position would be housed in CEO office and work with all programs.
Thought leadership and management (50%)
- Ensure WRI India’s Equity and Poverty Strategy has a compelling vision, strong research foundation, and meaningful results that inform and impact policy and practice
- Promote close and effective collaboration with WRI India programs and centers to support the development and implementation of WRI’s work program on equity and poverty
- Liaise with WRI’s Centre for Equitable Development and WRI’s Managing for Results team to ensure institutional cohesion on issues relating to strategy, management and metrics on equity and poverty across the Institute
- Author or co-author knowledge products and review and provide constructive feedback on knowledge products on poverty and equity produced by WRI India
- Cultivate relationships that expand audiences for, and uptake of knowledge products on poverty and equity produced by WRI India
- Leverage partnerships, national and international engagement to support effective advocacy for inclusive governance, equity, poverty and sustainable development, and represent WRI India in national and global debates and platforms on equity, poverty and development.
- Write briefs, publish blogs, and conduct media interviews to set public and private sector agendas, influence decision-makers, and communicate findings and recommendations from WRI’s work.
Technical Support and Project Development (50%)
- Provide support to WRI India program and project teams resulting in projects with defined targets for equity; attention to equity and poverty issues in technical reports that shape environmental and economic practices; and enhanced research on equity and poverty
- Review draft annual plans, publications, blogs, press releases, and other research and communications materials developed to ensure they meet WRI’s standards for equity responsive programming
- Identify data and methods needed to produce robust, unbiased research that addresses knowledge gaps and influence effective strategies for integration of equity and poverty considerations into proposals and project design, and the indicators and metrics to evaluate and measure impact.
- Provide mentoring and capacity building to staff on equity and poverty issues.
Fundraising (Desirable)
- Identify and cultivate new donors to establish a funding base for equity and poverty work in WRI India
- Raise funds as needed to support project development and implementation in partnership with the Development team, other WRI programs, centers and IOs.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in equity, poverty and or sustainable development issues
- Advanced degree in relevant discipline (Economics, Political Economy, International Development, Sociology, Anthropology, Public Policy, Law and Development, Social Policy, Racial /Gender Studies or related social science)
- Recognized expertise and track record of publication on equity or related issues in the context of international development or environmental policy and governance.
- Proven experience in providing technical support in all phases of the project cycle, and in particular on Learning, Monitoring and Evaluation and Impact. Strong expertise in quantitative and qualitative research methods.
- Experience in fundraising, including knowledge of aid agency policies /requirements on equity, poverty or gender requirements is desirable
- Demonstrated ability to translate research findings into policy and/or practice
- Proven ability to work with a wide variety of partners and effectively manage external and institutional relationships
- Demonstrated ability to successfully motivate and manage teams to reach their full potential and achieve on-the-ground results.
- Strong team player with ability to work across institutional departments/programs.
- Proven ability to provide vision and superb strategic thinking skills.
- Outstanding ability to communicate clearly, passionately, and compellingly to a wide range of audiences, especially high-level decision-makers from government, the private sector, and civil society
- Strong writing skills, both for technical and general audiences.
- Strong network of relationships and partners.
- Experience of overseeing and managing budgets.

Duration: Full time Term staff – 2 years (extendable)
