The Opportunity
A PhD scholarship is available to work with experts across the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and the Faculty of IT at Monash University. You will combine big pharma data, molecular dynamics, cutting-edge deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to design next-generation polymyxins, the last-line antibiotic therapy to treat infections caused by Gram-negative bacterial pathogens.
You will join an international leading research team with skills and expertise in bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, antimicrobial chemistry and microbiology to develop novel antibiotic therapeutics to fight against the unmet global challenge – antimicrobial resistance. The project has the potential to transform antimicrobial discovery through interdisciplinary innovation.
Responsibilities and qualifications
You will be involved in data-driven big pharma data analytics, through learning to apply cutting-edge deep learning techniques and combine the currently available polymyxin data to develop the quantitative membrane-based structure- or signature-activity relationship model for the discovery and design of novel polymyxins against polymyxin-resistant Gram-negative bacterial pathogens. During the project you will be expected to learn the basics of antimicrobial chemistry, bioinformatics, machine learning and AI development.
Ideally, you should have data-driven bioinformatics/machine learning/deep learning background and skills. Applicants should have a related master’s degree and co-authored papers in either of the six disciplines: Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or Physics. Applicants with a degree in other related fields are also encouraged to apply.
More specifically, you should ideally have the following qualifications:
• Extensive experience with bioinformatics and computational biology or experience in algorithm and software engineering
• Thorough knowledge in data mining and machine learning/deep learning/pattern recognition
• Good communication skills in both written and spoken English
• Ability to work interdisciplinary is an advantage.
About the Scholarship
We are introducing one of the most generous and prestigious PhD scholarships of any university in Australia. With a highly competitive stipend, this scholarship aims to support a community of future thought leaders addressing some of the most pressing global challenges through the advancement of AI and data science.
Graduate research students receiving the Monash Data Futures Institute PhD Scholarship will learn from eminent academics and researchers from across the Humanities, Science, Engineering, Technology and Medicine fields. Students in this program become pioneers at the intersection of data science, AI and the human experience. The skills acquired are transferable across education, corporate, and government sectors, enabling graduates to apply their training to a broad spectrum of career paths.
Candidate Requirements
Outstanding students with an excellent academic track record and a strong interest in AI and data science are invited to submit an Expression of Interest.
Applicants need to provide evidence of qualifications equivalent to a First Class Honours 1 (H1), relevant research training experience and English-language proficiency skills, in addition to the minimum qualifications for standard entry admission (https://www.monash.edu/graduate-research/support-and-resources/handbooks/content/chapter-two/2-1) to undertake a PhD at Monash University.
Scholarship holders must be enrolled full time and on campus. Applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.
Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)
Please visit the Monash Data Futures Institute PhD Scholarships website (https://www.monash.edu/data-futures-institute/study/phd-scholarship) for a complete list of PhD projects available, and to submit your EOI.
Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed and the successful candidate(s) will receive an Invitation to Apply for admission.
