GenU brings together leaders from governments, UN agencies, the private sector, academia, international and civil society organizations, and young people. The partnership will identify, co-create, resource and scale-up innovative solutions to expand opportunity for young people. Effective programmes will be matched with financing and technical support; investors will find viable solutions to invest in and strong accountability mechanisms that provide adequate assurance of results and fiscal management; and young people will participate meaningfully in the co-creation of solutions, informing, advising and helping implement at every step of the way.

Under the direct supervision of the Youth Engagement Specialist, with overall guidance from the Senior Adviser  Programmes and planning, and in collaboration with the Youth Engagement team, the consultant will manage the Youth Challenge 3.0, including upgrading the content, running the country support, and ensuring global coordination.

How can you make a difference?

By supporting the Youth Engagement team of Generation Unlimited, the Youth Challenge Consultant will be responsible to:

  • Capture lessons from the two previous Youth Challenges to support the overall upgrade and design of the Youth Challenge 3.0
  • Support coordination of partners of the Youth Challenge at the global level
  • Work with partners to ensure a digital component of the Youth Challenge is developed and is accessible to countries and young people
  • Ongoing support to remaining workstreams within the Youth Challenge 2.0, such as communications support, incubation etc.
  • Develop and update clear and accessible documentation, as needed, to support the Youth Challenge
  • Provide remote technical support to Country Offices and partner organizations that are hosting the local challenges
  • Provide technical support and advice to UNICEF Country Offices on tailoring and adapting the initiative for their context
  • Lead on the coordination of the global judging process and global mentorship support
  • Support the linkages between Generation Unlimited and UNICEF Office of Innovation, particularly on the Youth Innovation Portfolio
  • Provide inputs to partnership development proposals and ongoing management, as needed, relating to the GenU Youth Challenge and other youth entrepreneurship programming
  • Work with partners to ensure utilization of a peer-to-peer learning and engagement platform for Youth Challenge participants
  • Insure Systematic and meaningful youth engagement in the decision-making processes of the coordination and implementation of the Youth Challenge
  • Internal and external stakeholder engagement
  • Support GenU Youth Engagement team on any other matters as necessary.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • A first degree in Social Sciences, Humanities, International Relations or other relevant field or related practical experience;
  • At least 2 years of experience in public policy, international relations, initiatives including adolescents and youth in development and humanitarian contexts;
  • Experience in running a similar programme (or hackathon, challenge, or competition) on youth innovation or entrepreneurship, at the local, regional, or global level required;
  • Experience in working with organizations focused on engaging and empowering adolescents and youth, especially the most marginalized preferred;
  • Fluency in English is required, strong written and verbal competency is necessary
  • Working knowledge of another UN language an asset

Standard UNICEF Performance Evaluations will be conducted every 6 months and/or at end of contract. The performance indicators for evaluation of results will be the quality and timeliness of outputs delivered by consultant.

Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors.
