Main purpose of job:
The appointee to this position will provide maternity leave cover for 1 year.
The role will see you working with exciting companies as they expand internationally.
You will support the trade and export ambitions of UK companies and New Zealand companies with UK expansion plans. Specifically, you will support on market research, business set-up assistance, sector information and expansion support to high-growth businesses in New Zealand and the UK.
This position will also provide general administration, marketing and event support for the Director of Trade and Investment.
The job holder will report to the Director of Trade and Investment (NZ) and form part of a wider UK network at the British Consulate and the British High Commission.
Roles and responsibilities:
This exciting and engaging role will primarily work with leading UK companies seeking to expand into NZ. The role will include elements of travel to visit companies as well as for learning and development.
You will work with each company to support their internal decision-making processes. This will be achieved through account management, project management, relationship management, and administration of the Department’s data needs.
The role requires collaboration through a virtual team structure in Australia and New Zealand (colleagues are located in Auckland, Wellington, Perth, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane).You will also work regularly with UK-based sector and investment teams and regional team colleagues, who each support you by providing introductions, economic data and research.
The ability to build and establish strong relationships within the NZ business community, and other industry multipliers to actively support and leverage the UK DIT’s outcomes will be viewed favourably.
Specifically the role will include:
- Administrative support to the Director of Trade and Investment
- Marketing and event delivery support for the team
- Strategic research to support the team on sectors of growth and emergence, including the development of sector reports and market intelligence reports.
- Management and answering of export enquiries from UK companies.
- Stakeholder mapping exercises to build networks with key industry stakeholders and associations.
- Support for ministerial visits, external meetings and VIP visits by providing relevant briefings and background notes.
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate field
- A minimum of one years’ work experience in business, ideally in an international & B2B context, business development or market research.
- Strong inter-personal, networking, presentation and communication skills
- Strong research and analytical skills with capacity to collate and synthesis information from a wide variety of sources and tailor information to diverse audiences
- Good knowledge of the New Zealand business environment
- Ability to deliver to ambitious targets and outcomes
- Proactive and enthusiastic with a self-starter mind-set
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team
- High level organisational skills and ability to work at pace under pressure to achieve results
- Some knowledge of the UK’s business environment, and some regional centres of the UK.
- Some knowledge of the processes involved in overseas company expansions (foreign direct investment and international trade (exports).
- Competency and experience with Microsoft Teams
- Experience with research intelligence tools, such as IBISWorld and customer relations management systems

Some travel may be required around New Zealand to develop sector knowledge and for departmental training.
Appointment is subject to a 90 day trial period and gaining and maintaining Posts security clearance requirements.
Open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, partners/dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in New Zealand and holders of a current work permit.
Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. Candidates must have or be able to obtain work authorisation for New Zealand in order to apply.
