The British Embassy in Athens is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Estates Assistant / Porter who will contribute to the delivery of the Embassy’s estates maintenance programme.
The Embassy estates portfolio includes a number of office buildings as well as residential properties that need to be maintained to required Health and Safety standards. You will be joining our Estates maintenance team, assisting our technicians in taking forward various maintenance works, as well as in supervising external contractors. You will also be assisting our Porter in moving furniture and lifting of heavy items as well as undertaking other Portering duties.
In undertaking this job it is essential that you hold a valid driving license for both car and moped. It is also essential that you are healthy, and able and willing to undertake heavy lifting and work outdoors. Equally, you need to be available to assist out of hours or during holidays if the need arises (being compensated in line with Greek Labour Law provisions).
You need to confident, flexible esp. when working under pressure, staying composed in difficult situations. Being a team player is also very important, as is to be discreet at all times.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Assist Technical Works group (TWG) technicians in maintenance works such as painting and decorating, carpentry, electrical, air-conditioning and other maintenance works;
- Assistance/supervision to external contractors doing maintenance work at the Embassy (e.g. repairs, pest control, etc.);
Assistance to TWG in responding to emergency repairs/maintenance at the Embassy campus or residential properties (faults, flooding, cleaning spills, etc.); - Moving of Furniture and equipment internally/externally at the Embassy/Residence (collecting/delivering furniture to properties, curtains replacement, etc.) and assistance in setting up/preparing of facilities for events, crisis centre, etc.;
- Purchasing maintenance work materials, as well as supplies, equipment, furniture (i.e. cleaning materials, float items etc.) as requested by the Estates Officer/TWG;
- Assist in maintaining clean storerooms (in house and external), stock control, notifying management of need for repairs and replacements of “float items” and deliveries of items for dry cleaning;
- Provide cover for the Porter in Pool maintenance (checking chemicals/measurements);
- Assist in Cleaning and maintaining clean entrances/walkways, car parks and surrounding pool area;
- Provide cover for the porter in gardening Embassy plants as required;
- Assist in maintaining/cleaning/maintenance of Residence fish pond and with checking of good use of gym equipment;
- Assisting in emptying trash bins and taking trash bins out for collection by the municipality;
- Support TWG technicians in monitoring/processing of work requests and compliance checks;
- Any other tasks commensurate with the above Job Description and grade.
- Independent in oral and written English and a good level of Greek language skills (minimum B2/B1 for English and Greek according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages *);
- Able to work effectively, both individually and in collaboration with the estates team;
- Excellent interpersonal skills, responsive to client’s and team needs;
- Able to treat others with respect and courtesy regardless of work pressures, being able to deliver the work assigned to a high standard;
- Flexibility to meet the demands of a fast moving, varied work schedule. Prepared to work additional hours in support of Embassy maintenance requests;
- Able to act with discretion at all times;
- Well organised with excellent time management;
- In good health and fit to carry out heavy lifting and work outdoors;
- Car and moped driving licence.
- Knowledge/experience in areas of maintenance work e.g. painting and decorating, carpentry, electrical, air-conditioning would be an advantage;

This is a part-time, fixed-term for 6 months position of 35 hours per week .
The British Embassy offers a competitive remuneration package, 24 days annual leave entitlement (given pro-rata to staff on fixed-term contracts and/or staff working part-time), a training package and flexible working opportunities. Monthly salary for this position is EUR 1109.40 (Gross) currently payable 14 times a year (as per Greek labour law). An individual personal development plan will be agreed with the successful candidate.
The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background and security clearance. Anyone with right of residence and employment in Greece may apply, including all EU / EEA citizens and the family members of EU / EEA nationals exercising a treaty right in Greece.
