Main purpose of job:

As a key member of the British High Commission’s Foreign Policy and Security Team, you will bring expert reporting and analysis on foreign policy issues relevant to Bangladesh and the wider South Asia region. Your deep understanding of regional foreign policy developments will be underpinned by a good understanding of the local political context and the government and non-government institutions with an interest in foreign policy matters.

You will develop and draw on a network of contacts that will help ensure that teams cross the High Commission and in  in the UK can benefit from sound advice on foreign policy issues including in the development of British government policy. This effort will help ensure that we have the right contacts in the right places to understand emerging risks and long term trends. 

The role will include some opportunity for travel. As with all members of the High Commission you will be expected to contribute to wider High Commission priority activity, including high level visits and events. 

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provide informed, timely and strategically aware foreign policy analysis relevant to Bangladesh and the wider region. 
  • Maintain and extend the Foreign Policy and Security Team’s network of contacts with government, academia and civil society: use that network creatively to get to the people we need to speak to quickly and effectively.
  • Contribute to High Commission discussions on our strategic objectives.
  • Using your foreign policy expertise, support teams across the High Commission to help deliver UK objectives, high level visits, and senior engagements.
  • Represent the High Commission in meetings with contacts and at public events; occasionally act as interpreter at high level meetings.
  • Contribute proactively, fully and constructively to the High Commission’s change and corporate agenda.

Language requirements: 

Language: English and Bangla

Level of language required: Exceptional command of written and spoken English and Bangla. These will be tested at interview.

Learning and development opportunities:

Essential on arrival:

  • Previous experience of working on foreign policy and/or political issues
  • Education: Bachelors degree; ideally in International Relations, political science or similar
  • Knowledge of Bangladeshi politics, foreign policy institutions and key influencers.
  • Have strong IT (particularly Word, Excel,Outlook and Teams) and knowledge of the internet and social media for use in research work.
  • A proactive dynamic individual with a can-do attitude, who works well in and across teams.
  • Be well organised and able to demonstrate flexibility.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to combine objectivity with discretion.
  • Have a track record in managing and prioritising your workload.
  • Confidence and commitment to deliver with minimal supervision.

Desirable: 

Experience of working with international partners.

For other than BHC candidates, salary range will be BDT 161, 379 per month.
