WRI Overview
World Resources Institute  (WRI) is an independent, nonprofit global research organization that turns big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity and human well-being. We are working to address critical challenges that the world must overcome this decade in order to secure a sustainable future for people and the planet: climate change, energy, food, forests, water, sustainable cities, and the ocean.

Internships at WRI are learning experiences designed for current students, recent graduates, and other candidates who wish to gain knowledge about a specific area of our work. We strive to attract diverse, intellectually driven candidates who have a passion for sustainability and development. WRI provides many internship opportunities throughout the year in all our programs.
WRI is committed to advancing gender, racial, and social equity for human well-being in our mission and applies this principle to our organizational and programmatic practices.

Program Overview (for Internship):
Following the landmark Paris Agreement, countries are implementing their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for climate action. The NDC Partnership is a coalition of countries and international institutions working together to ensure countries receive the technical assistance and financial support they need to achieve ambitious climate and sustainable development targets as fast and effectively as possible. The Partnership aims to increase alignment, coordination, and access to resources to link needs to solutions. 1. Technical Assistance and Capacity Building – We support governments in defining the processes, policies, and plans required to deliver mitigation and adaptation goals, alongside other development objectives. 2. Knowledge and Information Sharing – We enable countries to learn from and support each other, turning local know-how into global action through knowledge tools, case studies, peer-to-peer exchanges, and other knowledge products. 3. Access to Finance – We facilitate countries in aligning their NDC goals with financial resources. We use a country-driven approach that helps governments set priorities and connect them to available resources across our membership. The NDC Partnership Support Unit is comprised of around 50 staff, jointly hosted by the World Resources Institute in Washington, DC, and the UNFCCC in Bonn, Germany.

Internship Summary:
This intern will play an integral role in the data and analyses components of two cross-cutting areas of the NDC Partnership – gender mainstreaming and youth engagement. Under its 2019 Gender Strategy, the NDC Partnership commits to mainstreaming gender equality into NDCs and the climate action that members support. To facilitate this, the NDC Partnership will assist member country to access the gender-related knowledge resources and capacity building support of the Partnership’s implementing and development partners. In 2020, the NDC Partnership’s Steering Committee established a Youth Task Force to guide a youth-led process in developing a Youth Engagement Plan (YEP) for the Partnership’s members. The YEP highlights key actions areas designed to strengthen youth engagement in NDC action. The intern will support these two areas of work and improve the existing information resources that enable the NDC Partnership’s support to countries in a coordinated and effective manner.

Internship Learning Outcomes:
The intern will gain experience in the following areas:
• Improving information resources for effective gender mainstreaming and youth engagement in climate action o Update the mapping of gender- and youth-related programs and knowledge resources of NDC Partnership implementing and development partners, including dedicated programs and capacity building resources supporting gender- and youth-responsive climate action, available analyses at country level, and gender and youth experts in different regions, and updating internal knowledge sharing boards/mechanisms to support easy information access by the Support Unit’s country and regional teams. o Support data extraction and analysis from the Partnership’s internal knowledge management system (kNook) related to gender and youth in climate action. o Research and catalogue new tools and guidelines from members and partners, to add to the pool of gender- and youth-related resources on the Partnership’s Knowledge Portal.
• Facilitating gender mainstreaming in the Support Unit’s country engagement framework o Assist in the tracking of progress to achieve the minimum standards as set out in the NDC Partnership’s Gender Strategy, including improving and simplifying the tracking system in line with the Support Unit’s monitoring system o Help surface gender-related challenges faced by staff and partners in implementing the Gender Strategy o Provide support on extracting concrete examples of gender equality in climate action from in-country work to be showcased as effective practices by the Partnership
