The British Embassy in Rome are part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for an Export Growth Adviser to join the Department for International Trade (DIT) team. This role may be based in Rome or Milan.

In line with the Europe Regional Trade Plan aim to grow British exports to Europe, DIT is recruiting an Export Growth Adviser to join the DIT Italy team .
This position will report directly to the Senior Trade Advisor for Life Sciences and Government Relations in Rome and will work closely with the DIT regional enquiry hub (based elsewhere in Europe) and with DIT’s export support network in the UK. In collaboration with these teams the jobholder will identify and deliver opportunities for high potential British exporters in Italy, particularly innovative small and mid sized businesses in sectors of artificial intelligence and Fintech. A core element of the role will be to deliver practical support to those companies, including information on market potential, in-market representation and potential clients. The job holder will also work proactively with colleagues to identify areas of export growth potential and promote these opportunities.
In parallel, the job holder will maintain contacts with DIT commercial partners, and, where necessary, develop new relations with private sector providers of commercial services aiding UK companies with their exporting goals. As with all DIT positions, there will be a focus on working collaboratively with colleagues across the Italy network team – on policy, science & innovation and outreach – to maximise opportunities for the UK. The work will be varied and demanding and the successful candidate will need to be a flexible, committed self-starter, able to juggle priorities and to work on demanding timelines.
Main responsibilities will include:
- Support the DIT Europe Trade enquiry hub in delivering commercial services, guidance, information and support to high potential British exporters – including innovative small companies, entrepreneurs and MSBs;
- Help to create and maintain strong and mutually-beneficial relationships with DIT’s export support network in the UK to identify, target and engage a pipeline of high potential clients;
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across Europe and Italy network to ensure a comprehensive and joined-up approach that maximises the returns for high potential exporters – using success in one European market as a springboard to success in another;
- Contribute to efforts to communicate opportunities in the European market through support for an imaginative regional promotional programme;
- To scout and investigate emerging business sector offering scope for DIT Italy team growth;
- Maintain excellent databases and records to facilitate and encourage collaboration and to measure success;
- Maintain contacts with DIT commercial partner and, whether necessary, help to build in-market networks and partnerships able to provide commercial services, guidance, information and support alongside DIT teams;
- Corporate – contribute to cross-cutting Embassy activities. Actively engage in corporate activities and initiatives in the Italy Network.

This is a full-time fixed-term contract for 1 year with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement, graded A2 (L) according to the FCDO grading structure. The monthly gross salary is € 2.312. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.
Working hours are 35 hrs per week. There is flexibility on how the hours are worked across the week although 4 or 5 days is preferable.
The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional background check and the successful completion of a 4 month probationary period.
All staff employed by the British Embassy/British Consulate General are subject to Italian income tax (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Rome/British Consulate General in Milan are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
