How can you make a difference?
 

The Regional Support Center, PFP Section, UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO) is seeking to hire a consultant that will conduct in-depth research about the landscape and engagement with philanthropic intermediaries in Asia, including India who play a significant role with high net worth individuals’ philanthropic and charitable decisions. These intermediaries include but are not limited to wealth advisors, donor advised funds (DAFs), family offices and financial philanthropy leaders in Asia. This research will cover private sector high net worth individuals/philanthropists and major donors who rely on these kinds of wealth institutions to make philanthropic decisions. Results aim to be both informative of the current landscape and key actors and also provide recommendations on how best to engage these entities to advance the regional partnerships strategy towards greater revenue attainment.

Work Assignment:

A. Landscape analysis of philanthropic intermediaries such as wealth advisors, donor advised funds (DAFs), family offices and philanthropic vehicles for giving

• Research and analysis on key actors who serve high net worth individuals in their philanthropic decision making. Key insights should include the background and history on top wealth advising institutions, philanthropic advisory bodies, donor advised funds (DAFs), high net worth family offices and other relevant key leaders in this arena for Asia including India.

• Conduct interviews with key stakeholders both in Asia and globally who serve Asia to summarize key insights, conclusions and then prioritize ranked recommendations for UNICEF.

• Provide comprehensive assessment on significant associations, conferences, meetings, webinars, events that wealth advisors attend and participate in so UNICEF can participate in key functions as well, as relevant.

B. Support PSFR Country Office Philanthropy teams

• Participate in Country Office philanthropy team discussions about the key philanthropic intermediaries in each country office market and make recommendations on opportunities and priorities, plus tabulate by ranked importance the portfolio of wealth advisors both at a local and global level.

• Provide background, history, information and knowledge on these philanthropic intermediaries in the Asian region including India and those globally who serve Asian philanthropists

• Provide training to UNICEF philanthropy teams on effective ways to engage with philanthropic intermediaries and suggest how to steward/cultivate long term relationships with them.

• Use assessment to identify a portfolio per country (6 PSFR Country Offices: China, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, India) of wealth advisors, donor advised funds (DAFs), philanthropic managers, family offices, etc. in Asia that the team should focus on engaging with.

C. Provide guidance on how best to engage

• Provide a clear guide on how wealth advisors work, their goals, key markets, trends and areas of programmatic focus.

• Provide recommendations on how country office fundraising national teams can best engage such wealth advisors.

• Support on introductions and outreach to these relationships

• Work closely with Regional Partnerships Manager to align with the global philanthropy strategy in this area.

Final draft of the research paper and completed capacity building training to CO philanthropy teams on how to identify key wealth advisors and best practice approaches.

Seven months after start date


End Product(s):

  • Research paper with a comprehensive landscape analysis of the market of wealth advisors, donor advised funds, philanthropic managers in the Asia region including India; identification of key actors with a deep understanding of how they work in Asia, with relevant examples of success evidenced.
  • Top level highlights on the key opportunities identified at a local level and separately with global institutions with a footprint in Asia who have a significant influence in the region.
  • Provision of an assessment on each PSFR CO market within this landscape study.
  • Identification of key philanthropic intermediaries and leaders in this field for Asia; development of a clear, ranked portfolio of who to target.
  • Recommendations on how and where UNICEF should focus our engagement and relationship development.
  • Provision of communications plans and implementation of activities with relevant strategic partnerships.
  • Capacity building training to CO philanthropy teams on:
    • how to identify key wealth advisors and philanthropic intermediaries’ work and program focus areas
    • best practice approaches to successfully work with wealth advisors, donor advised funds (DAFs), philanthropy managers, family offices, etc. to access and cultivate high net worth relationships

Duration of Contract:  October 2021 – June 2022 (full-time for 8 months in length).

Working Location:  Home based with calls/ virtual meetings with relevant offices; no travel is foreseen.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

Education: Advanced university degree in Business, Finance, Social Sciences or equivalent professional work experience in the area of fundraising, finance industry, non-profit philanthropy. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience: Experience in major donor fundraising and working with philanthropic intermediaries or financial institutions that manage individual philanthropic wealth. Minimum six years of progressively responsible and relevant professional international work experience in business, finance, social sciences, non-profit organization or philanthropy fundraising. Or strong demonstration of understanding philanthropy landscape of Asia

Language Requirements: Fluency in verbal and written English is required for this position. Competency in reading Mandarin or an Asian language is beneficial for research purposes but not required

Other Requirements:

• Advanced ability to express clearly and concisely ideas and concepts in written and oral form

• Ability to work in an international and multicultural environment.

• Ability to multi-task, to handle stressful situations effectively.

• Ability to work well under pressure in a highly organized manned and in response to changing needs

• Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations within a team.

• Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

• Experience of financial advisory service providers is useful, but not essential

• Be available to meetings during Bangkok business hours when needed
