Program Overview for Energy

The objective of the WRI India energy program is to inform and guide India’s transition to cleaner energy. The program focuses on three inter-related aspects of this energy transition: enhancing energy access, scaling renewables among specific consumer categories, and achieving higher levels of energy and buildings efficiency. Our energy access work is specifically aimed at ensuring access to affordable and clean energy so as to improve socio-economic development in rural and remote regions of India. Through strong research, ground-level implementation experience, partnerships with key stakeholders and communicating our work, we seek to achieve impact at scale.

Position Overview:

The Energy Finance Lead will be a key subject matter expert and will contribute to developing strategy and implementing activities designed for specific audiences. (S)He will work with colleagues in the Energy Program to facilitate the flow of finance for clean energy projects for different consumer categories, design and implement new business models and engage policy makers to inform changes in policy needed to facilitate clean energy financing.

Responsibilities

The Lead’s main areas of responsibility will include the following:

Program Development and Convening (40% of time required)

The Lead will further develop and will be responsible for the Energy Program’s work on clean energy finance, aiming to catalyze finance for clean energy solutions. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Developing the Program’s strategy for its energy finance work, with a focus on both international and domestic sources and innovative financing mechanisms for access to clean energy solutions for different consumer categories during course of the energy transition.
  • Coordinating with the Program’s overall strategy and with the energy strategies developed by other offices in the WRI sisterhood.
  • Leading, organizing and facilitating high-level external meetings, workshops, conferences, and other project dissemination activities with stakeholders on energy finance, including government, regulators, discoms, development finance institutions, foundations, bilateral donors, corporates, and energy entrepreneurs.
  • Helping to lead the Energy Program team fundraising efforts, in particular for clean energy finance-related work.
  • Engaging closely with other WRI programs, including the Finance Center, to provide support on the clean energy dimensions of their work on shifting global financial flows;
  • Serving as one of WRI’s clean energy finance experts for internal and external audiences, including representing WRI at high-level events.

Research & Knowledge creation (30% of time required)

  • Leading, coordinating, and publishing new research on clean energy finance in India and other developing countries.
  • Mentoring junior researchers.

Program/Project Management (30% of time required)

  • Managing and leading projects, ensuring deliverables are on-time and within budget.
  • Managing/helping manage grants & budgets

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Expertise in the energy sector particularly energy finance.
  • Familiarity with international financial institutions (including development finance institutions), mechanisms and governance.
  • Graduate degree in a relevant discipline, such as finance, energy policy, public policy, economics, environmental law or policy.
  • At least 15 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience authoring and leading research publications and the ability to identify relevant research questions and establish the qualitative or quantitative evidence needed to answer the questions credibly.
  • Excellent writing skills, with proven experience writing clearly and concisely for specific audiences, e.g. policymakers, business leaders, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in multicultural settings and with diverse teams of individuals and colleagues.
  • Strong project development and management experience.
  • Detail-oriented and organized thinker who can juggle multiple, competing priorities.
  • Flexibility to travel 30% or more of the time. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Private sector experience in clean energy; (capital markets/project finance/private equity)
  • Strong quantitative skills, including facility in economics and/or statistics.
  • Professional proficiency in multiple languages.
  • Experience in developing countries

Potential Salary: 22,00,000 to 25,00,000 INR CTC Per annum 

Salary and Benefits: 

Salary shall be commensurate with experience and skills. WRI offers a generous and comprehensive benefits package.

Duration: Term Hire for 3 years (Extendable based on Performance and Project requirements) 

Location: Delhi, India
