The British Embassy in Algiers is seeking an Intern to join the Political & Communications Team. 

The team is responsible for reporting on the domestic political situation in Algeria, covering topics from party politics to human rights. 

The team is also responsible for the embassy’s external communications, maintaining relations with the traditional media as well as producing products for social media. 

You will assist with day to day media analysis in addition to generating content for the embassy’s social media feeds, including through filming, editing, and translating material.

Main responsibilities will include:

  1. Daily media analysis, tracking stories of interest to the British Embassy, compiling daily press cuttings;
  2. Creating communications products to promote British interests in Algeria, as set out in the Algeria Country Plan and our Communications Strategy, through filming, editing, and posting videos and scripts; and
  3. Translating OpEds and Press Releases for Arabic media outlets.

The above list is not exhaustive and the intern will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required.

  • Fluent level of English & Arabic. Ability to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely, both orally and in written communication
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility and the ability to work well independently and as part of a small team.
  • Experience with video editing and graphic design programmes.
  • Experience of photography and filming.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and associated software.
  • Proven interest/ background in a field relevant to media or international relations.
  • Solid command of Microsoft Office.

This internship is for a part-time employment, on a fixed term basis for eleven (11) months. This is an unpaid internship – no stipend or allowance is given as part of this internship.

Conditioned working hours are 15 hours per week. Normal working hours are 08:00 – 15:30 Sunday to Thursday. However, working hours for the successful candidate will be flexible and to be agreed with the Line Manager. Ideally you will work 3 hours per day from Sunday-Thursday. There will be an opportunity to work remotely, within the constraints of needing to film materials.

Within the embassy there is an active L&D culture with a variety of opporunities on offer, from ad-hoc learning sessions run by embassy colleagues to more structured courses. You will be encouraged to participate in these.

Process:

The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around two months.
