ABA ROLI is seeking a part-time “remote rule of law consultant” through July 2022 to support the Middle East and North Africa program. The consultant will engage in the following duties:

JOB SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct research and generate analyses on information and perspectives related to legal, political, economic, and social developments as well as operational and security risks in the Middle East / central Asia region. This includes reading regional and international business news, academic studies, NGO and government reports, and local press sources in order to draw out relevant conclusions.

  • Review laws, regulations, cases and decrees in local languages and present analyses of issues to the program team.

  • Support the program team with technical assistance on program development, content, campaigns and analysis.

  • Take part in relevant workshops and brainstorming sessions on legal technology and generate ideas using technology to address human-rights related issues.

  • Provide input to the program team on potential future projects and programs, including the setting of benchmarks.

  • Edit and proofread information in local languages and perform content check of text that comes back from the translation process.

The rule of law consultant will report to Program Director for the Middle East and North Africa at ABA ROLI. This is a part time consultancy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Law or Master’s degree in relevant field (current Law or Masters students also encouraged to apply).

  • Fluency and English and written and oral fluency in Dari/Pashto or Farsi (Persian).

  • Familiarity with the regional legal system, as well as the current political, economic, and socio-cultural contexts.

  • An understanding of, and strong interest in, the regional legal, political, security and business environment; ideally with broader experience in the MENA region.

  • At least two years of relevant work experience in a similar role.

  • Ability to work without direct supervision, paying close attention to detail and bearing independent responsibility for accuracy.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Sound judgment and ability to maintain the strictest confidentiality

  • Previous experience working on international donor-supported programs.
