Psychologist Trainer on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) (Consultancy)

The Opportunity

Experimental and correlational evidence demonstrate that alcohol consumption increases the risk of violence against children (VAC) and violence against women (VAW). This is particularly evident in developing countries, where there are high rates of both alcohol use and VAC & VAW. Although experts have developed interventions that effectively reduce alcohol consumption, many of these haven’t been evaluated on their effectiveness at reducing violence. Interventions aimed at reducing violence, on the other hand, hardly ever account for or address the impact of men’s alcohol use on violence, particularly in developing countries like Cambodia. Furthermore, almost none of these alcohol and violence interventions have been implemented and rigorously tested in developing countries.

This project includes the design and pilot testing of an alcohol abuse-reduction and VAC & VAW-prevention intervention based on a set of cognitive behavioral therapy sessions that have proven successful in reducing alcohol use and violence. The pilot test will be conducted in the communes of Rolea B’ier District in Kampong Chhnang Province in Cambodia.

This project falls within a broader RECOVER project, which is a strategic partnership between Save the Children Cambodia and the Center for Utilizing Behavioural Insights for Children (CUBIC) at Save the Children, Gender and Development for Cambodia (GADC) and Cambodia Disability Persons Organisation (CDPO) to pilot new ways of engaging men and boys in exploring their ideas about fatherhood and respectful relationships.

The aim is to develop a culturally-safe and gender-transformative solution that will inform national policy, campaigns and programming initiatives through innovation and behaviour insights. RECOVER will provide vital evidence to the Save the Children movement and improve programming interventions that aim to increase male engagement in household and caregiving responsibilities, reducing violence against children and women. In this context, CUBIC is looking for a psychologist trainer to support the development of the project.

  1. Train selected local counsellors to facilitate CBT sessions, as specified in the research protocol’s Terms of Reference.
  • Help adapt training materials that were designed for a similar intervention in India, to the local context.

  • Foster a culture of continuous quality improvement: lead and participate in project-wide quality improvement initiatives. Seek constant feedback from Save the Children teams and report findings from the actual sessions.
