Main purpose of job
This is a challenging and varied position based in the British Consulate-General in Sao Paulo as Part of the Political team, which has members based in Brasilia, Rio and Sao Paulo. It will give the successful candidate opportunities to work with key issues in the United Kingdom and Brazil bilateral relationship. The jobholder will provide analysis and advice on domestic political issues across the country at federal and local levels, alongside a focus on São Paulo state and city governments. It also involves administrative and financial duties that can vary and could include managing local political projects. The role includes proving political analysis on issues relevant to UK interests through written reports, as part of monthly Domestic Policy presentations, and in response to specific requests. It also involves supporting senior political engagement in Sao Paulo and beyond, and liaising with teams across the UK’s network of diplomatic posts in Brazil, with a specific focus on commercial and programme teams based in Sao Paulo. It also includes work on high-level/ministerial engagement.
Roles and responsibilities
- The successful candidate will have the chance to advise diplomats and senior managers based in Sao Paulo and other UK diplomatic missions in Brazil. Specifically:
- As a key member of the Brazil Network Domestic Politics Team, collaborate on our reporting and advice on key political issues and trends relevant to UK interests, providing research and analysis.
- Advise the Consul, Vice-Consul, and Commercial and Programme teams at the British Consulate-General in São Paulo on domestic and local politics relevant to their objectives.
- Engage with working-level contacts in the local Executive and Legislative instances, accompany high-level meetings with senior British officials in person and online, including providing briefing and handling advice beforehand, making records of the meetings, and following up as necessary.
- Monitor political developments, including by writing briefs on local government/stakeholders, monitoring local political news, dynamics and key policy developments, and political stakeholder mapping and management.
- Provide support for political events. Responsibilities include arranging meetings, booking venues, setting up events (branding, catering, etc.), coordinating mailing lists, sending and following up on invitations.
- Manage political projects. This includes identifying project interventions that will have an impact in Sao Paulo, bidding for funds, ensuring effective implementation alongside complementary political and communications work.
- Assist in the organisation of political visits from the UK to Brazil, including arranging logistics such as accommodation and transport, as well as co-ordinating briefing packs and meetings.
- Hold a University degree or two years of relevant work experience.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent organisational skills and good political judgment.
- Strong numerical and IT skills (MS Office).
- Proactive and creative self-starter.
- Ability to prioritise and deal with multiple tasks and priorities.
Language requirements
Language: Portuguese and English
Level of language required: Fluency in each. The main working language of the Consulate-General is English, so the jobholder should be able to write reports and briefings in both English and Portuguese.
- Experience in working with domestic politics and institutional affairs.
- Experience with research and written reports.
- Experience with governmental relations and/or political consultancy.
