Main purpose of job
As an intern at the British High Commission, you would part of a vibrant, dynamic and focused team working to achieve the main objectives of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). You would be involved in departmental workflows assisting the various teams to achieve their team objectives from Corporate Services, Trade, Political and Economics and Consular Departments.
You would support teams by executing assigned tasks efficiently and to deadline working with others to when required. You would also work independently with little supervision in a flexible working environment to deliver tasks competently, managing your time effectively. You would engage external suppliers and customers as needed and use good judgement and professionalism to get the job done successfully. You would seek clarity when needed and communicate with project leads to resolve issues and provide solutions ensuring communication is effective. Some tasks may be off premises at one of our estate properties, it would be essential to integrate well, work as a team player overall, follow protocols and support the core behaviours and values of the FCDO.
Roles and Responsibilities
Intern Responsibilities:
- Fulfil tasks set out by supervisors from several departments.
- Attend meetings and take minutes.
- Perform research an inventory tasks assigned.
- Perform administrative duties.
- Update social media platforms when needed.
- Engage with teams, contractors and stakeholders as needed.
- Support Corporate Services (CS) in the development of an operations manual.
- Support CS’s with its Teams and hardcopy filing systems.
- Assist with the coordination of the furniture auction.
- Provide support for Events at the Residence.
- Strong communication skills both written and verbal and strong organisational skills.
- A final year student or recent graduate of a university degree in international relations, social sciences, communication or other relevant field.
- Strong skills in the use of Microsoft Teams.
- Strong prioritization and time management skills working in a fast pace environment with little supervision at times.
Must have the legal status to live and work in Trinidad and Tobago. In “Other benefits and conditions of employment
- Experience working for an international organisation
- IT skills in particularly Microsoft Outlook, Teams and Outlook ; good communication skills, good administrative skills; good literacy, numeracy and attention to detail.
- Experience in Social Media management.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Working patterns
Interns are able to work from home on a regular basis, subject to operational requirements and commitments, in agreement with line/senior management.
