The British Embassy in Copenhagen is part of a world-wide diplomatic network, representing British political, economic, consular and prosperity interests overseas. An exciting opportunity has arisen and the Embassy is now looking for a Political Officer.
How can you contribute?
You will join the Embassy’s Political Team: a high performing team which enjoys a strong reputation for the quality of its reporting, analysis and influencing for customers across Whitehall. Policy priorities include: climate change and COP 26, domestic politics, foreign policy, CT, NATO, Arctic, energy, economic recovery, development and human rights, and a range of prosperity, and values-based campaigns. The team also covers Greenland and the Faroe Islands, where occasional travel will be possible.
As a key member of the Political Team, you will lead on the UK-EU relationship and policy areas arising from the UK’s departure from the EU; migration policy; and the UK’s relationship with Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Duties will include researching and reporting; building a network of contacts in the the Danish MFA and across government and with think tanks, academic and NGO communities; engaging with your contacts to gather information and lobby on behalf of the UK; and organising events and visits in line with Embassy priorities.
Key responsibilities:

Responsible for the coordination of UK-EU and DK-EU policy issues in the Embassy, including reporting on the implementation of the political aspects of the Trade and Continuity Agreement in Denmark and carrying out related lobbying activity. Tracking and providing high quality analysis on wider international and domestic policy issues and their implications for UK interests.

Coordinating policy with Denmark on priority issues such as migration policy and COVID 19, and lobbying on key priorities for the UK. Lead policy officer on Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Arranging, and helping others to arrange, visits for UK Ministers, senior officials and Parliamentarians.

Line management responsibilities for one person.

Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Danish (C1 level under the CEFR or equivalent*).

A deep understanding of UK and Danish politics and Denmark’s international priorities.

Experience of working in a governmental or international environment.

A flexible attitude and ability to switch easily between policy dossiers.

Proven ability to prioritise, handle multiple tasks and respond quickly to changing circumstances.

An understanding of and interest in EU-UK relations.

A person willing to support the wider team and Embassy through corporate leadership, such as championing Learning and Development.

This is a full-time permanent contract of 35 hours net per week.
The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance..
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Copenhagen are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Danish employment law.
