Main purpose of job:

This role provides maternity cover for our current Head of Marcomms.

The role overseas the development and delivery of strategic communications campaigns for the Department for International Trade – the UK Government department responsible for supporting UK companies to grow in Australia & New Zealand and Australian & New Zealand companies to invest into the UK.

It is an exciting time for the Department for International Trade as the UK Government works to finalise the Free Trade Agreement with Australia and New Zealand. Key to this role will be working with your communications team and colleagues across the network to communicate the benefits of the FTA.

We want to continue to build the UK’s reputation as a first class destination for inward investment, an export superpower and enhancing the reputation of the UK Government and the Department for International Trade as a source of expertise, influence, impact and reach.

While your focus will be on promoting investment and trade opportunities you will have a key role in communications wider UK Government priorities to a business audience. You will be part of the a wider communications team based in Sydney and Canberra and managed by the Head of Australia Network communications. You will also work collaboratively with other communications teams including Visit Britain and British Council. 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

This is an exciting leadership opportunity for a confident, motivated and experienced professional. You will have a strong marketing and communications background and be responsible for managing activity across Australia and New Zealand, supported by a small team.

Working alongside our trade and investment business development teams, the Head of Communications and our Asia Pacific hub, you will refine and implement a marketing and communication strategy which positions the UK as an ideal trade partner; generates demand for UK products and services and encourages Australian and New Zealand companies to invest in the UK.

You will use a range of channels including digital, social, direct marketing, experiential, media and PR. You will require high level project management skills as well as the ability to work well with external (and internal) stakeholders. 

You will also provide best practice support to business development teams across the network who organise and deliver events and promotion activity with marketing funding. You will ensure teams are providing clear bids for funding with strong objectives, VfM and measurement against KPIs.

You will be used to working in a fast-paced environment, have strong team management and mentoring skills and know how to bring out the best in your team.  You will demonstrate a commitment to self-development and developing others, building long-term staff capability and competency in and beyond own team.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver strategic communications campaigns to achieve business objectives. These insight driven campaigns will be across owned/earned/paid for campaigns and be targeted to reach the key audience.
  • Manage delivery across multiple campaigns, keeping work on track and to budget and reporting regularly across the network.
  • Set direction for and manage a small communications and marketing team including Communications Manager and Marketing & Events Manager, ensuring quality and timely output.
  • Evaluate activity to demonstrate success, learn lessons and refine future campaigns and activity.
  • Oversee social media channel output and strategy. Provide strategic direction as necessary and ensure continually evaluation of activity against benchmarks.
  • Develop good media relationships and monitor media environment across the sector. Identify proactive opportunities to deliver key trade and investment messages and support campaigns.
  • Identity, escalate and manage reputational or communication risks and crisis situations.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations to sector and investment teams to develop and run the events and promotion activity related to their sector or area. You will oversee all bids from the business teams for marketing funding, ensuring that they represent value for money, have strong KPIs and a plan for measurement.
  • You and your team will support these sector teams to access best practice guidance around their work to ensure they are delivering to the highest possible level.
  • Track the sector and investment team’s spending against marketing budget, highlight delivery risks and ensure business delivery remains on track.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a wider communications team which includes Visit Britain and British Council to support the UK Government’s work in Australia and New Zealand. Ensure team engages and supports wider strategic communication campaigns, including soft power campaign.
  • Manage team to support communication planning for inward visits from UK Ministers and VIPs; support Consul General’s with communication advice to maximise their profile.
  • Provide wider network communications support as required, including media handling for high profile consular cases, announcements or other crises.
  • Oversee core communication products including events calendars, social media calendars and evaluation products.  
  • Write/oversee writing of media lines, core scripts, briefs, speaking notes, articles, case studies, copy for digital and print and project bids. Ensuring materials are high quality and cleared by the relevant lead(s)
  • Ensure integration and leverage of ‘GREAT’ Britain brand across all activity in compliance with brand guidelines and champion the GREAT campaign locally, identifying opportunities to maximise exposure.
  • Lead tender processes, commission work, manage contracts and negotiate with third party suppliers in line with procurement guidelines.

Essential on arrival:

  • At least 5 years of work experience in strategic marketing/communications;
  • Minimum bachelor degree level, preferably in marketing and/or communications;
  • Proven track record in development and delivery of strategic communication and marketing across a owned, earned and paid for channels;
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and ability to influence senior leaders and stakeholders, as well as work collaboratively across peer networks;
  • Engaging and resilient leader, able to empower colleagues and build capability;
  • Ability to manage a number of different projects and deliver on time
  • Excellent writing, proofing and editing skills for both traditional and new media
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, delivering and evaluating communications activity/campaigns
  • Experience managing corporate or government social media account(s)
  • Knowledge of Australian media landscape; ability to source and maintain a network of media contacts
  • Budget management skills and experience.
  • Ability to evaluate activity across a range of channels to demonstrate success, gain insight and understand how to improve campaigns and activity in the future.

Language requirements:  

Language: English

Level of language required: Fluent  

  • Understanding of the political, business and investment climate in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
  • Experience in designing and developing content for digital channels.
  • Understanding of the Australian (and UK) media landscape with previous experience in dealing with the media on reactive or proactive issues.
  • Line management experience
  • Ability to create rich media content for social media eg: using smart phone for photography, video and editing; creation of infographics/gifs.

This position is being advertised as a 12 months fixed term/maternity cover position in Australia, and with the possibility of extension if additional parental leave is taken.
