Main purpose of job:
To manage the day-to-day smooth running of the Deputy High Commissioner’s Residence, including managing events and overseeing the work of other Residence staff. To cook meals as and when required, including for high-level visitors.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
Residence Manager 50%
- Ensure successful day-to-day operation of the DHC’s Official Residence in line with FCDO policy.
- Ensure the Residence is well-maintained and that residence related issues are resolved quickly, working closely with the Corporate Services team.
- Line-manage and provide leadership to the 3 member Residence team.
- Maintain inventory of official quota of alcohol, record consumption and keep auditable records.
- Manage events, including co-ordinating with external catering agencies end ensuring smooth service during events.
- Welcome guests on arrival.
- Liaise with building management and residential society.
Food shopping and preparation of meals 25%
- Prepare small lunches and dinners for visitors to the Residence.
- Liaise with DHC over menus and to source the ingredients for meals.
- To be cost & quality conscious while shopping for food, ensuring value for money.
Running the Residence Kitchen: 25%
- Maintain accurate inventory of kitchen equipment, cutlery and the food is consumed and stored etc.
- Maintain up-to-date shopping ledger, pay & account for expenses using the office accounting software and get them approved.
- Ensure high levels of cleanliness & hygiene are maintained in the kitchen and in preparation of meals.
- Ensure tables are cleared and cleaned, and that dishes, utensils and kitchen surfaces are cleaned after each meal.
- Preserve food & leftovers properly and ensure refrigerators & freezers are kept free of unwanted/ expired food stuff.
- Draw up deep cleaning schedules and ensure they are carried out.
- Report to Line Manager any replacements, damages, new procurement etc.
Resources managed (staff and expenditure):
3 staff and food purchases.
Learning and development opportunities:
On the job development training to be provided as needed. Possible opportunity to travel to Delhi to shadow British High Commissioner’s Residence Manager.
Language requirements:
- Language: English & Hindi, Spoken Marathi will be an added advantage
- Level of language required: Fluent in spoken & written English. Good spoken Hindi.

- Previous experience in a similar capacity/role
- Strong customer focus and ability to manage a team
- Resilience and flexibility
- Ability to cope with pressure
- Must be a team player and accommodate gaps in the team when required and share responsibilities equally

For BHC candidates, the Local BHC Terms & Conditions will apply.
For other than BHC candidates, Basic Salary will be INR 36,172 per month together with a 12% provident fund and 6% Superannuation Fund.

No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided.
Please note – BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
