The Opportunity

Save the Children International has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as the Emergency Health Unit (EHU) Field Hospital WASH Managerin any location or existing Save the Children International office.

ROLE PURPOSE:

The purpose of the Field Hospital’s WASH Manager is to ensure that the expected WASH minimum standards, laid out by the WHO EMT Initiative are met and maintained by the Field Hospital team. These are also to be adapted for possible use by other Save the Children priority country deployments. They will lead on all the technical and managerial aspects of the WASH related activities for the various rapidly deployable modules of the Field Hospital.

This includes being responsible for all work related to facility level. From the hardware side this is in reference to a focus on: water supply, treatment and monitoring of the sanitation including latrines, wastewater, solid waste management and vector control. On the software side, this is in relation to hygiene activities. In terms of deployment environments, these will vary and could be located in urban/rural, greenfield, high-water table and saline water areas where a sudden onset disaster or outbreaks has occurred. 

The Field Hospital WASH Manager during periods of non-deployment periods will also work with members of the humanitarian Public Health technical WASH team and support other programs and capacity building activities. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree or master’s degree in water and sanitation engineering, civil engineering, public health, or relevant technical WASH specialisation.
  • Demonstratable humanitarian experience (at least 5 years) with designing, implementing, and maintaining water, sanitation and waste systems in balance with hygiene promotion and vector control programs in field hospitals, health facilities and outbreak scenarios.

Fluent, written and spoken English with a proficiency in a second language such as French, Spanish, Swahili and/or Arabic

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Personal Profile 

The proposed role would suit an experienced humanitarian WASH professional, who is invested in delivering practical and pragmatic solutions to field hospital and healthcare facility WASH activities. The post-holder will work very closely with technical colleagues, operations experts, and country office teams to ensure delivery of quality acute emergency health service provision to communities, families, and children in greatest need. There will be an opportunity to develop and grow in this role, with frequent interaction within the organisation and with the wider humanitarian community. 

Essential Technical Skills:

  • Extensive experience of setting up field hospital and health facility WASH activities in humanitarian and large scare outbreaks responses to ensure that safe and effective water, sanitation including vector control, wastewater and waste disposal and management systems are in place.
  • Strong knowledge of the WHO EMT Initiative and the minimum technical standards for WASH.
  • Knowledge and experience of setting up large scale isolation and treatment facilities in outbreaks, such as for cholera, Ebola, measles, COVID-19 etc. and the required IPC protocols.
  • Proven previous experience in emergency water trucking, chlorination, and water quality analysis and the construction and the rehabilitation of WASH systems in low resource settings.
  • Experience of undertaking representational duties within the WASH cluster, WHO, donors and partners and ministries of health.
  • Experience and proficient in writing clear procedures, guidelines, targeted reports, critiques, and evidence-based analyses to a variety of audiences.

Personal Skills:

  • Previous experience of managing a large WASH team at national level, including national and international staff members.
  • Excellent interpersonal, motivational and management skills with extensive experience and staff mentoring capacity.
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Professional capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances.
  • Is a patient and strong communicator skills both orally and in writing.
  • Functions well in a working environment that involves a lot of diversity of cultures, languages, and personal interests and agendas. Creating harmonious and effective working relationships within and outside the organization
  • Strong problem solving, decision-making skills, with a “can-do” attitude
  • Systematic record keeper who keeps information up to date, understanding principles of data management.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and ability to deploy to overseas locations at very short notice
  • Ability to work in and maintain a positive team dynamic in insecure environments
  • Ability to reflect on and learn from personal and programme performance and act upon lessons learnt.
  • Commitment to the aims and principles of Save the Children and a solid understanding of the Save the Children’s mandate and child focus.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in developing documentation and the delivery of training both from a technical and non-technical users perspective
  • Proficiency in a second language such as French, Spanish, Swahili and/or Arabic
  • Experience of working in insecure environments.
  • Experience with institutional donors (FCDO, ECHO and OFDA, amongst others etc.)

We can offer circa $55,000 per annum with an option of flexible working hours.

This role can be based in any existing Save the Children International Regional or Country office location on approval, provided the successful candidate has proof of eligibility to work from the preferred location.
