Main Purpose of Job:

As a skilled communicator, analyst and project manager, you will deliver the British High Commission’s Good Governance project under the direct supervision of the High Commissioner. You will be expected to work directly with local senior officials and partners, ensuring projects are completed on time, deliver value for money and deliver the agreed objectives to the highest standard.

Leading on consular activities, you will provide support directly to British people who need our help, occasionally in distressing and challenging circumstances. You will co-ordinate BHC outreach activities with the British community, local authorities and partner organisations, with a focus on activities that help British people to stay safe in the Seychelles.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Good Governance Programme

  • Direct engagement with local Government and NGO partners to design and deliver new governance approaches that align with the mutual interests of Seychelles and the UK.
  • Project manager for a Police Reform Project, supporting senior law enforcement from the UK and Seychelles engaged on organisational change in the Seychelles’ Police Service.
  • Project Manager for an Anti-Corruption Project, working with local prosecutors and judiciary and providing international expertise to support Government of Seychelles’ efforts. 

Political Engagement

  • Engaging directly with Seychellois Ministers and Principal Secretaries on areas of HMG interest.
  • Providing thematic reporting on areas of interest.

Consular Services

  • Provide consular assistance to vulnerable British people in difficulty in the Seychelles, meeting service standards in line with our public guide, Support for British nationals abroad. This might include supporting victims of crime or those who have been hospitalised; ensuring the rights of arrested British people; and supporting bereaved families. You may occasionally need to work out of hours on the most urgent cases.
  • Develop productive working relationships across the tourism industry and relevant local authorities (police, prisons, healthcare) to help resolve consular cases quickly.
  • Develop campaigns and partnerships to help reduce the risk to British people in the Seychelles.
  • Provide accurate, up to date local consular information on gov.uk to help British people access local services. 
  • Crisis

Lead on the British High Commission’s crisis management plan, ensuring that the BHC is well-prepared to respond to a crisis.

  • Experience in project management

  • Educated to undergraduate degree level
  • Proficient use of Seychellois Creole would be an advantage

As part of a wider network of consular staff, there will be opportunities to support colleagues across the Indian Ocean network of British diplomatic missions, and occasionally more widely in Africa.

You will contribute to wider policy, corporate, admin work and public engagement in BHC Victoria. This will include exciting opportunities for learning, development and international travel.

  • Please note the salary is under review and also subject to a thirteen month payment.
