Main purpose of job:

IEI is Immigration Enforcement’s overseas network tasked with preventing illegal immigration and disrupting the organised immigration crime behind it. We support Immigration Enforcement’s key mission: to reduce the size of the illegal population and the harm it causes.

The successful candidate will work as part of the Home Office’s  Immigration Enforcement International (IEI) team in Kuala Lumpur at the British High Commission with additional responsibility for Indonesia and Singapore.   You will have responsibility for assisting the Immigration Liaison Officer and Manager to identify threats to the UK Border, prevent inadequately documented passengers from arriving in the UK, identify organised immigration crime and develop investigations to disrupt those responsible.

You will be working closely with the wider IEI Asia Pacific Team (based in Beijing, China) to identify and combat organised immigration crime and abuse of both the visa and air routes, prioritising investigations in line with adoption criteria, collating, risk assessing and disseminating intelligence, and developing risk profiles and alerts.

Good decision making and liaison skills, ability to work under pressure and with minimum supervision are key requirements of the role. 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

  • Prepare and undertake project research, verification and compliance checks.
  • Build and maintain relationships with airlines, local law enforcement partners and counterparts in other diplomatic missions to support IEI functions.
  • Ensure all intelligence is handled in compliance with relevant legislation and policy and is accurate and fit for purpose.
  • Gather, record and summarise statistics. Assisting in the production of reports.
  • Provide accurate written and verbal translation/interpreting support.
  • Manage and fully support all IEI administrative functions and be responsible for running the duty office.
  • Provide logistical support to the Immigration Liaison Officer / Manager.
  • Participate in capacity building activity and the successful delivery of associated projects.
  • Work as part of the British High Commission crisis response team

  • Strong interpersonal, organisational and time management skills
  • A high level of written and spoken English and Malay Strong organisational and time management skills.
  • An ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision is essential.
  • Good IT skills  

Language requirements:

Language: English, Bahasa Malaysia

Level of language required:  Excellent/Highly Proficient

  • Previous immigration, law enforcement and/or analytical or investigation experience would be an advantage.

The jobholder must be cleared to SC (O) clearance prior to taking up the position. The clearance level is a requirement of the Home Office. You must also already hold permission to live and work in Malaysia

This position is being advertised as a 24 months fixed term position in Kuala Lumpur, and will be extended subject to performance and availability of funding.

  • Working in a diplomatic mission;
  • Understanding how UK international development assistance is managed / implemented;
  • Understanding effective programme management (including Monitoring, Reporting, Evaluation, and Learning).
