The Department for International Trade (DIT) at the British Embassy, Amman is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual for the position of Trade and Investment Adviser, Grade – B3 (L).

 

Main Purpose of the job:

The Department for International Trade [DIT] is one of the economic departments with the responsibilities to help businesses export, drive inward and outward investments, negotiate market access and trade deals and champion free trade with the aim of securing UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment.

The Trade and Investment Adviser will contribute to DIT Jordan priorities which are guided by Middle East Regional Trade Plan and Jordan Plan to support UK entities take full advantage of trade opportunities, including UK-Jordan Association Agreement, resolve market access barriers and promote UK Export Finance in addition to assist Jordan-based companies to bring their high-quality investments into the UK.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Proactively develop, manage and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders in the Jordanian and British business community, relevant government bodies and investors in order to identify and increase export and investment opportunities for UK companies maximising the benefits of the UK-Jordan Association Agreement.
  • Monitor economic and trade trends with an overall responsibility for specific sectors (to be identified). As a sector lead, you will be responsible of obtaining market intelligence; identifying commercial opportunities for UK companies; monitoring market development and commercial projects; assessing demand for UK products and services and key areas of growth; actively seeking to engage with stakeholders and providing general or bespoke market analysis to guide UK companies in assessing the business environment. You will be identifying market access barriers and develop a plan to resolve the barrier with relevant stakeholders.
  • Facilitate, manage and represent DIT Jordan and the Embassy in relevant commercial events to highlight UK Excellence in lead sectors and target contacts through the GREAT campaign, exhibitions, launches, business receptions and seminars and promote DIT services and UK Export Finance.
  • Manage visit programmes and arrange meetings with key stakeholders to maximize exposure for UK companies and liaise with colleagues on media and press coverage. Provide relevant briefings, information and introductions that will help UK companies secure business in the market.
  • Export Wins: build an effective network of relationships with senior leaders in key companies and organisations in Jordan and the UK, including intermediaries, Trade Associations, and relevant Government Departments to contribute to relevant Regional and Jordan Trade Plans and DIT Strategic Priorities.
  • Work with the Head of DIT Jordan, take responsibility for marinating the section’s budget accurately and ensure forecasting is up to date. Create and update the team’s budget plan to monitor and report spending levels.
  • Support Head of DIT Jordan whenever needed on priority issues. Contribute to wider Embassy objectives through participation in Embassy committees and corporate activities.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills as well as being a strong team player with partnering skills with a diverse range of customers.  This is a high-paced role and you will need to be resilient in order to deliver high standards of service in a challenging but rewarding environment.  We are looking for someone that can demonstrate:

Essential:

  • Fluent communication skills in English (both spoken and written).
  • At least 5 years’ of relevant work experience and/or business development.
  • Strong client management experience.
  • Solid understanding of the drivers and challenges of the local sectors and major commercial opportunities and trends.
  • Ability to proactively develop and maintain a network of contacts to identify export opportunities and to facilitate business connections and partnerships accordingly.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications and influencing skills with attention to detail.
  • Other skills: proactive, team player with strong time management and IT skills (Microsoft applications).
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage varied workload including after working hours whenever needed.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with or knowledge of the UK market would be an advantage.

Working Hours and Remuneration:

The position is full-time, at 37 hours a week with considerations of flexibility depending on circumstances.

Pay is on the Embassy B3 (L) scale, with a salary of JOD 1,613 per month. Please note that your salary will be paid gross and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities.  If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax.  Further information on this will be given to candidates at interview if necessary.

This position is offered on a full time, permanent contract.

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-days probationary period (as appropriate). The selected candidate will have the right to live and work in Jordan.

The package includes a good level of health insurance and a friendly, English-speaking work environment. We offer opportunities to develop professional skills through our Learning & Development offer. Leave entitlement is 25 days (on pro rata basis) plus 14 public holidays.

Job holder will have access to the full suite of DIT and FCDO learning and developing opportunities including the FCDO’s Diplomatic Academy, training in the UK and will be encouraged to join DIT’s trade profession. We also provide regular in-house learning opportunities and are committed to supporting further academic opportunities.
