We are offering the following position in our unit ZIG 4 “Public Health Laboratory support” in the department ZIG “Centre for International Health Protection” for a
Head of unit “Public Health Laboratory support” (all genders)
(public sector wage scale [TVöD] up to grade E 15)
The position is to be filled as soon as possible. The contract is unlimited.
The ZIG 4 department is one of four departments in the ZIG, where the RKI’s laboratory expertise is pooled to support partners worldwide. This includes both rapid support to respond to outbreaks and long-term partnerships to support the laboratory sector of public health institutes and the structures in partner countries. This also includes the further development of methodology and standardisation. In this way, we strengthen international health protection through close networking.
Your tasks with us:
- Further development and implementation of the department’s strategy
- Managing the staff within the department and steering the preparation and implementation of the work plan
- Participate in the strategic development and operationalisation of the ZIG Division, considering the needs and requirements within the RKI and of partner organisations and partner countries
- Leading measures to establish and improve sustainable microbiological/virological laboratory capacities abroad and supporting laboratories in partner countries through on-site training and at the RKI
- Leading assessments of the laboratory capacities of international partners
- Steering the development and expansion of a laboratory training portfolio in the areas of diagnostics and biosafety
- Steering of standardisation and development of best practices in quality management and biosafety
- Lead and coordinate laboratory support operations in the event of outbreaks
- Conduct and participate in research and other projects to strengthen international health protection
- Coordinating implementation support for projects abroad
- Representation of the unit and the department in international networks and at events
What you bring with you
Formal qualifications/professional competences:
- Completed university studies (state examination, university diploma, master’s degree) in a discipline relevant to the position, e.g. human or veterinary medicine, biology, biochemistry, biotechnology (with specialisation in microbiology or virology)
- PhD in a field relevant to the position
Required skills and experience
- Several years of proven professional experience relevant to the position
- Experience in building and improving sustainable laboratory capacity abroad
- In-depth experience in project management
- Experience in working with international partners from different backgrounds
- Experience in the implementation of research projects
- Practical experience in writing, editing or reviewing scientific publications
Desirable skills and experience
- Experience in the team-oriented management of employees
- Professional experience in the fields of diagnostics and biosafety
- Professional understanding of the conception of mobile laboratories in international use
- In-depth professional experience with health projects in Official Development Assistance (ODA) recipient countries
- Medical specialist in microbiology, virology or infection epidemiology, or natural scientist with additional qualification in virology (German Society for Virology, GfV), or medical microbiology (German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology, DGHM)
Further requirements
- Required language skills (CEFR-level): English at least C1, German B2 and additional language skills are an advantage
- Willingness for an extended safety inspection in accordance with § 9 Safety Inspection Act (SÜG)
