Main purpose of job

To actively contribute to the British Embassy in Mexico City’s strategy of supporting UK companies in the energy sector to enter/grow their footprint in the Mexican market.

This will include working with UK exporters and investors in the sector to deliver an increase in trade and investment, whilst collaborating across a virtual team within the Embassy (of policy, programme and commercial colleagues) as part of a cohesive UK strategy.

The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, and will be able to collaborate and partner with internal and external stakeholders to achieve the energy team’s strategic activities, such as promoting UK capabilities in Mexico and communicating opportunities for UK companies in Mexico by carrying out business and market research and creating commercial intelligence.

In addition, the candidate will have strong organisation and communication skills, prioritising flexibly and using their own initiative to deliver his work successfully within the allocated deadlines.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) works with UK businesses to support UK exports and bilateral investment in Mexico. Headquartered in Mexico City, DIT Mexico works across 10 priority sectors, with regional offices in Guadalajara and Monterrey.

The UK’s Department for International Trade in Mexico is recruiting for the position of Energy Trade Officer, to contribute to this ambition.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on improving bilateral trade and investment between the United Kingdom and Mexico, especially through increasing UK exports.

This role will require developing robust communication channels with other DIT and Embassy Teams in Mexico as to identify crosscutting collaboration opportunities. In addition, the role requires:

  • Identify key stakeholders in the local market, build and maintain relationships and collect relevant information on potential business opportunities/export opportunities to share with the UK business community.
  • Promote UK expertise on energy services amongst relevant local decision-makers; conversely, increase UK companies’ awareness of projects and initiatives that have export opportunity potential.  
  • Contribute toward the pursuit of secondary benefits in the Energy strand of the Prosperity Fund.

You will work closely with the Head of Energy in Mexico and Energy colleagues across the Latin America & the Caribbean region, looking to support the UK’s energy transition objectives and identify decarbonisation opportunities in the local market, contributing to initiatives led by our Senior Energy Trade Officer. In addition, working with other parts of the British Embassy, our Mexican regional offices and government contacts in the UK make being able to collaborate and partner an essential skill.

This position suits an energetic, motivated self-starter with an ability to chart their course with little oversight. It will require a positive and proactive attitude that thinks in terms of unlocking opportunities for UK companies in Mexico.

Key responsibilities:

  • To provide logistic and organisational support  in trade missions and events organised by the Energy Team, paying attention to detail for internal procurement/contracting processes.
  • Deliver excellent customer service, with a focus on external communication with UK and Mexican stakeholders.
  • To identify potential key stakeholders for the DIT Energy Team, by attending meetings, relevant trade shows and networking events.
  • To monitor the media/ internet to identify opportunities and generate relevant market intelligence.
  • Contribute to the effective functioning of the Embassy Energy Virtual Team, as well as working with the Energy sector team in London to promote business opportunities to the UK industry.
  • Work closely with the Marketing & Communications team to promote UK capabilities in the sector.
  • Deliver work in line with Embassy Values (Honesty, Professionalism, Inclusion & Respect)
  • Contribute to the corporate objectives of the Embassy

–        Education to undergraduate level in a relevant subject.

–        Energy sector knowledge

–        Good organisational and communication skills.

–        Previous experience working in commercial activities and event organisation.

Language: English and Spanish

Level of language required: Fluent written and spoken
