Scope of work

SWHF is a not for profit Organisation registered at the Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce. The Foundation aims to provide aid to communities and persons recovering from conflicts and disasters; provide support and orientation to refugees and communities in hosting countries; support justice and Human Rights efforts.

The Visual Documentation Team (VDT) Project is a Justice and Accountability Project that addresses relevant issues in Syria. The project aims at assisting transitional justice mechanisms, and other research processes. Due to the nature of the project, staff involved will likely be required to work with potentially graphic content.

The Data Translator is responsible for interpreting written or spoken material, creating glossaries or term dictionaries.

Tasks and Activities

  1. Conduct written English-Arabic and Arabic-English translation of written documents, transcription of audio or video recordings, and other media;

  2. Providing support and assistance in-office meetings, ensuring all participants are aware of activities and outputs;

  3. Create glossaries or term dictionaries related to the SWHF field of expertise;

  4. Providing tutoring to English-speaking and Arabic-speaking;

  5. Coordinate additional language services support as necessary including from bilingual staff and from external sources.

Required Qualifications Education, Experience and Competencies.

  • BA degree in a relevant field (e.g. linguistics, translation, etc.);
  • At least 3 years’ work experience, including at least 2 years’ previous experience as an English-Arabic interpreter/translator;
  • Current knowledge of the history, context, actors, and conflict dynamics of the Syrian context;
  • Functional native proficiency in both English and Arabic, both spoken and written
  • Demonstrated high ability to interpret simultaneously and consecutive English-Arabic and Arabic-English, both in “whisper” translation and through an interpretation booth;
  • Excellent English-Arabic/Arabic-English written translation skills, Dutch is a plus;
  • Excellent writing ability in both English and Arabic;
  • Outstanding organisational and time-management abilities;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills, and able to interact professionally with culturally diverse staff and stakeholders;
  • Ability to perform clerical work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • High standards of confidentiality, reliability and discretion;
  • Integrity by sharing the SWHF’s values and ethical standards.
