Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. Context:

Background Information

Within the Department of Migration Management (DMM), the Migration Health Division (MHD) has the institutional responsibility to oversee, support and coordinate the Organization’s provision of migration health services globally. The Division provides technical guidance and policy advice, establishes partnerships with relevant governmental, multilateral, civil society and private entities in the domain of migration health, and identifies strategies and programmatic approaches that are informed by agreed policies, evidence, standards and trends in the sector.

Supervision

Under the overall supervision of the Emergency Operations Health Officer, and direct supervision of the Public Health Officer (in close coordination with the Global Health Security Project Support Officer). The successful candidate will work as part of the team in the area of the Migration Health Division that is responsible for emergency and crisis programming (Migration Health Assistance for Crisis Affected Populations).

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with overall emergency health programming at HQ, including supporting the review of project proposals, appeals and reports relevant to IOM’s MHD Emergency Health programming, working with relevant related technical units including WASH, Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), Protection and Immigration and Border Management (IBM).

  2. Provide technical assistance with MHD’s knowledge management efforts, including overall knowledge management support, and maintenance of the MHD Emergencies sharepoint & MHD COVID-19 sharepoint, in coordination with other colleagues.

  3. Assist with data-driven initiatives, including annual reporting (coordination, collation and analysis), alongside relevant liaison with country and regional offices; population mobility mapping (PMM initiatives); and data visualization and representation (including power BI).

  4. Support COVID-19-related initiatives related to monitoring and evaluation (M&E), and the global roll-out of the IOM COVID-19 M&E framework.

  5. Update and design products and info-sheets to help aptly represent the work of the emergency health team.

  6. Provide support on the roll-out of training initiatives, including research, content design and participation.

  7. Support development and rollout of the Health, Border and Mobility Management (HBMM) toolkit and training package, including collation, content design and support for related workshops and meetings.

  8. Participate in trainings and working groups as appropriate, including the working group on IOM’s point of entry (POE) work, and external working groups.

  9. Assist with coordination of admin tasks including travel authorizations, payment request forms and so forth.

  10. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Training Components and Learning Elements

• Gain a better understanding of IOM’s work, as part of the UN family and in the field of Migration, alongside working with Governments and other partners to help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration.

• The successful candidate will acquire technical knowledge in humanitarian public health emergencies, across a variety of different technical areas.

• S/he can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM staff.

• S/he will gain experience working in an international and multi-cultural environment.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

Master’s degree in Public Health, Medicine and/or other related Social Sciences or a related field from an accredited academic institution.

Experience

• Experience and/or familiarity with communicable, and non-communicable disease control, including HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, WASH, and other public health and migration health related subject matters (including in emergency contexts);

• Experience and/or familiarity in research, with focus on public health (or medicine) required;

• Experience and/or familiarity with the UN system a plus.

Skills

• Demonstrated ability to write clear and concise progress reports, proven skills in writing summary documents and editing reports, project documents and proposals;

• Excellent computer literacy, including database tools and experience in using medical and public health research tools online;

• Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

• Statistical software, ArcGIS and/or Power BI is advantageous.

• Proven ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to set deadlines and requirements from supervisors;

• Ability to work effectively both on his/her own, and within a team of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;

• Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English; working knowledge of another UN language is desirable;

• Strong organizational skills.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of French, Arabic and/or Spanish is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;

b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or

c) are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor;

d) are either students approaching the end of their studies and preparing a thesis, or recently graduated, who have less than two years of relevant working experience;

e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.
