Main purpose of job:

The Department of International Trade in Panama City is looking for a full-time intern to join the team, eager to learn and passionate about international commerce. The candidate will report to the DIT Advisor while working closely with the Head of Trade & Investment. The applicant’s main role would be to support the team’s overall objective of facilitating trade and business opportunities for British companies in Panama.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Assist the trade team in delivering the multi-sector campaign objectives in areas such as: education, life sciences, rail, water, smart cities, infrastructure and sports economy.
  • Conduct market research across the multiple sectors of Panama’s economy.
  • Assist DIT officers during the planning and delivery of trade missions to Panama.
  • Collaborate with new ideas, directions, and tools for communications that facilitate the completion of the team’s objectives.
  • Provide administrative support for and during events and marketing activities. 

This is a 12 month contract.    

  • Recently completed or towards completion of a first-level university degree or Master’s degree, preferably in related fields (e.g. Business Management, International Relations, Law, Marketing or Industrial Engineering).
  • Fluent in English and Spanish.
  • IT proficient.
  • Research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Academic GPA of 2.00 (of 3.00) or higher or equivalent.
  • Enthusiastic and willing to learn.
  • Ability of work independently with little supervision and pro-actively to complete assignments.
  • Team player and customer service oriented.   

 The candidate would ideally be politically aware and familiar with international trade topics.

The successful candidate must be Panamanian, or have a valid and current Work Permit through Ministry of Labour, and be able to provide it when requested by Embassy.  The British Embassy – Panama City does not sponsor work permits.  Office hours in the embassy are 8am-5pm Monday to Thursday and 8am-1pm on Fridays, though there is scope for flexible working arrangements, which can be agreed with the Line Manager. 

This job involves flexible working, sometimes working late nights due to official events and networking receptions, prior discussion with Line Manager.
