Context:
Under the overall supervision of the Deputy Chief of Mission (DCoM), the direct supervision of the Head, Project Development & Programme Support Unit, Sana’a, the successful candidate will be responsible for implementing communications, public information and media related activities for IOM in Yemen and in coordination with IOM’s Regional Office for MENA and Media and Communications Division (MCD) in IOM HQ when relevant.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
- Participate in implementing IOM Yemen communications strategies in line with the Organization’s guidelines and donor requirements, contributing to an accurate narrative on displacement, migration and other issues central to IOM with various partners and stakeholders.

Implement project visibility and communications plans in line with donor requirements.

Supervise relevant support staff in the Media and Communications Unit (MCU).

Provide inputs for communications content, including stories, blogs, video and social media content.

Maintain and update IOM Yemen’s social media accounts and website.

Draft press releases and other information materials for internal and external use.

Provide inputs for statements, talking points and other relevant background documents.

Liaise with the UN Country Team’s Communication Group and other relevant actors to work together on campaigns and issues of joint concern.

Conduct training workshops for MCU team members, other units and field teams as required. Provide technical assistance to field teams.

Undertake field duty travel as needed to compile materials and take photographs and video footage.

Check that audio and visual media content being collected by IOM Yemen includes appropriate informed consent and is captured and stored according to the organization’s digital library and data protection protocols. Alert the supervisor of non-compliance issues.

Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education
• Master’s degree in Journalism, Mass Media Communications, Public Information or a related field from an accredited academic institution with two years of relevant professional experience; or
• University degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience.
Experience
• Experience in journalism and public information;
• Field Experience in writing and reporting in international and crisis contexts advantageous;
• Experience working in the region and/or in an emergency setting an advantage;
• Experience in interfacing across units and departments within IOM/UN to extract relevant information.
Skills
• Knowledge of traditional and social media;
• Excellent skills in drafting, editing and graphic design;
• Online communication and social media skills;
• High level of professionalism and ability to work under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines in a complex and fast changing environment;
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds;
• Demonstrated gender awareness and gender sensitivity; and
• Knowledge of international agencies like the UN an advantage.
Languages
IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.
For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of Arabic, Amharic, Oromo, and Somali is an advantage.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
