Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian organization. The Operational Centre (Barcelona and Athens) is looking for a:

MISSION EPIDEMIOLOGIST

TO WORK FOR NORTH SYRIA MISSION (REMOTE MANAGEMENT)

Duty Station: Amman-Jordan

Main objective:

The Mission Epidemiologist is a technician who will contribute through his/her expertise to improve data quality and the surveillance system, contribute to data analysis and reporting, and reinforce operational research and/or survey activities. He/she will train also other MSF profiles on epidemiology activities.

Main Responsibilities:

In charge of epidemiological surveillance activities in the NW Syria. This includes both community and health facility-based surveillance:

  • Guiding associated staff (CHWs & medical staff) on case definition, reporting procedures, case investigation.
  • Regularly check and report any outbreak alerts detected and support investigation.
  • Support the update of surveillance guides and supervises the implementation.
  • Ensuring the update of the Alert Management Tool.

In charge of monitoring and evaluating activities and health information system:

  • Designing a monitoring plan for any new activity.
  • Support regular data collection for the HMIS by making sure that staff are collecting data correctly.
  • Analysis of data to estimate process and impact indicators and interpreting them as per the project log frame.

Support Medical Coordinator as data/info focal person for the mission. This includes:

  • Monitoring the Syria EWARN reports and websites for seasonal disease trends.
  • Participating in cluster meetings to build epidemiological intelligence network.

Support or implement cross-sectional surveys in field projects and support operational research activities. This includes:

  • Assist in drafting protocols for ethics review purposes.
  • Preparing survey tools and training data collection teams.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Master degree in Epidemiology and/or Public Health (with strong epidemiology modules); medical background is an asset.

Experience: At least 2 years working in humanitarian sector in MENA.

  • Experience in mobile data collection, data management and analysis; mapping/GIS techniques, dashboard development.
  • Previous experience with MSF is an asset.
  • Previous participation in field epidemiology training programs is an asset.

Skills: MS Excel is essential. Experience in using any of the analysis software such as R, STATA, SPSS and/or EpiInfo; and familiarity with DHIS2, Microsoft 365 suite (including familiarity with PowerBI).

Languages: Essential English & Arabic (written and spoken).

Competencies: Strong communication skills, Behavioral flexibility, stress management.

Starting Date: As soon as possible.
Initial offer of 1 year fixed term contract with probation period.
This position is a local contract, open to individuals who already have the right to work in Jordan.
