Established in 1984 in the UK, Islamic Relief is an international NGO seeking to promote sustainable economic and social development by working with local communities through relief and development activities. We aim to help the needy regardless of race, religion or gender. Through working in chronic food deficit areas and in the most disadvantaged areas, IRK has ensured that its programmes target those who are most vulnerable in the most disadvantaged areas. These programmes include Health and nutrition, Water and Sanitation, livelihoods, Child-welfare and other special programmes (Qurbani and Ramadhan).

The Islamic Relief Kenya in its pursuit to support and strengthen its operations, seeks to employ motivated, hardworking and pro-active individuals to fill in the following position;

Job Title: Project Assistant (PA)

Reporting To: Project Coordinator

Base Location: 50% Garissa Field Office 50% Mandera field office

1. Scope of the Role:

IR Kenya implements programmes across the three pillars of its country strategy for 2016 – 2021 Disaster and Emergency Response; Sustainable Community Empowerment; and Education and Child Development. The project focuses to address the problems affecting the full enjoyment of rights by the Muslim minority and the African Traditional Religions (ATR) communities in Kenya

The project assistant will support in the implementation and monitoring of the project “Religious minorities in Kenya: Overcoming divides, respecting rights” activities in Garissa and Mandera Counties. The main tasks and competencies required are described below.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

a) Strategic and Programme Development

· Assist in the development and implementation of the Religious minorities in Kenya: Overcoming divides, respecting rights Project.

· Contribute to internal discussions on thematic issues particularly on the religious minority rights, advocacy and Gender equality.

· Participate in sector project concept and proposal development based on the identified priorities in line with the sector strategic and business plan

b) Project Implementation

· Support in development and implementation of the Religious minorities in Kenya: Overcoming divides, respecting rights Project

· Conduct social mobilization to sensitize the community on the project activities

· Carry out project beneficiary identification through a consultative community process

· Prepare Project work plans, detail implementation plans (DIPs) as well as project monitoring plan

· Develop and submit project monthly, quarterly and annual report in line with IRK and donor requirement

· Assist the Project Coordinator in coordinating the implementation of the project with the other partner agencies.

· Participate in and contribute to quarterly and other scheduled programme performance review meetings

· Document and report any protection related concerns

· In collaboration with the communication officer and project partners design appropriate IEC materials for community education and advocacy.

· Perform other duties of similar nature assigned by the project coordinator

c) Monitoring, Documentation, Communications and reporting

· Ensure the project targets achievement is in line with the plans and result framework

· Develop project implementation tools including Detailed Implementation Plans (DIPs), M&E Plans, Procurement Plans, Communication plan, weekly/monthly work plans as may be necessary.

· Document community and stakeholders’ feedback and share with relevant stakeholders for appropriate action.

· Ensure timely submission of project reports as per IR and Donor requirements.

· Regular monitoring and evaluation of project implementation at field Level.

· Keep track of Project progress against indicators set in the result framework

· Ensure compliance with the requirements of the IRK’s M&E System, Core humanitarian Standard (CHS) and other relevant policies.

d) Coordination and Networking

· Represent IRK at relevant functions as may be requested by the line Managers.

2. Education requirements

· Higher Diploma in Governance, peace and conflict studies, Development studies, Human rights, anthropology, Religion/Theology, Project Management or related fields

· Minimum of at least three years’ experience in in development aid/peacebuilding/project management

· Experience in projects planning, Implementation, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning.

· Knowledge of the key issues and trends in advocacy and social mobilization.

· Past work experience with the similar geographical context is desirable.

Personal attributes

· Ability to work independently as a part of a team to implement the project.

· Proven analytical skills and ability to think strategically.

· Fluency in English – written and verbal

· Experience in Field data analysis packages

· Effective IT Skills (Microsoft Office).

· Planning, narrative and financial reporting skills.

· Strong Communication tact and negotiation skills.

· Ability to multitask and perform in busy working environment.
