About Syrian Women’s Oral History project:
In a contested process of writing Syria’s recent history, the exclusion and marginalization of Syrian women’s voices is an incessant issue. At the core of our Syrian Women’s Oral History project is the mobilization of women inspired to take an active role in the preservation of Syria’s historical narrative. Accounts of the past that encompass the social, cultural, and political dimensions of the Syrian context, ultimately ultimately nurtures greater awareness, engagement, and support for rights-based causes among the Syrian public and the wider international community.
Women’s voices are often unheard, ignored or silenced, despite them being the greatest bearers of the burden of war, violence, conflict and displacement. The multi-layered and gendered impact of the events that transpired post-2011 are vast and less studied, yet the Syrian women oral history project is one of the first steps to preserving and documenting these experiencing, building an oral history archive of Syrians.
The novel approach of this research is rooted in a grassroots method where the female researchers are part of the communities where they conduct the fieldwork. It is part of the ethos that Syrians are drivers of knowledge production and memory preservation.
