Here at Syria Relief we have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Chief Operating Officer (COO) to join our team based in Salford, Greater Manchester. You will join us on a full-time basis as part of an initial 1-year fixed term contract with a view to progressing into a permanent role. In return, you will receive a competitive salary depending on experience.

Syria Relief is one of the leading Syria-focused charities in the world. We provide lifesaving and life-changing support to millions of Syrians every year through emergency interventions, providing medical facilities, food, clean water, shelter, orphan support, protection and education.

As our COO, the successful candidate will work closely with the CEO to deliver the charity’s strategy, overseeing several departments. The COO will also ensure results are delivered, efficient and effective policies and processes are in place and followed, be responsible for leading on operations and overseeing Finance, HR, Advocacy, Marketing, IT, Fundraising, customer service (Donor Care), and take responsibility for managing the Syria Relief head office.

The ideal candidate will have high quality managerial skills and planning skills, with strong finance skills, an eye for detail, and the ability to understand what it takes to turn vision into action. The candidate will also be practical, focused, and results driven, passionate about the humanitarian sector and will demonstrate a genuine commitment to the organisation’s growth and success.

We are ideally looking to appoint somebody immediately to this role.

Key duties and responsibilities of the COO:

  • Successfully support the strategic direction of the charity, contributing to business growth & development
  • Successfully oversee head office operations, managing the running of the several departments
  • Manage the fundraising and donor care departments, ensuring the departments are effective and efficient, with a high return on investment
  • Manage the advocacy & marketing department, ensuring strong delivery of a successful communications strategy, including advocacy, PR & Marketing
  • Oversee compliance for the whole organisation, ensuring the charity has effective due diligence in place, as well as all required policies and procedures, in line with regulatory bodies and legislations.
  • Successfully support the senior management team with governance, risk management and compliance, safeguarding and ensuring best practice.
  • Successfully develop and implement the annual action plan and budget

What we’re looking for in our COO:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Finance or Human Resource qualifications
  • At least 7 years experience in the charity sector
  • At least 5 years experience in a senior management role
  • Highly developed interpersonal and motivational skills
  • Proactive and innovative demonstrable approach to work
  • Strong written and spoken English essential
  • Spoken Arabic desirable
  • Other languages bonus
